This game isn't a real pain in the ass to play on English computers though. (still can't get the demo of Scarlet Demo working, even with AppLocale).

Have you installed Asian fonts?
Otherwise I'd suggest asking on Shrinemaiden's tech support board, or trying a demo from a more recent game.
