apologies if i've missed this being mentioned already, just got an email from Sega saying the following.

"As you may be aware, the SEGA Pass system has been offline since yesterday, Thursday 16 June.

Over the last 24 hours we have identified that unauthorised entry was gained to our SEGA Pass database.

We immediately took the appropriate action to protect our consumers’ data and isolate the location of the breach. We have launched an investigation into the extent of the breach of our public systems.

We have identified that a subset of SEGA Pass members emails addresses, dates of birth and encrypted passwords were obtained. To stress, none of the passwords obtained were stored in plain text.

Please note that no personal payment information was stored by SEGA as we use external payment providers, meaning your payment details were not at risk from this intrusion."


This whole hacking crap is getting more than a little tiresome, not that i even know what my password was on there as its been that long i'd forgotten i'd even got an id for it.

at least no harm was done to the users

How do you figure? They did get user information and if recent history is any indication, they are going to publish that info on TPB, which can harm users very easily.

curious, other reports say they are resetting passwords even though they're encrypted. I suppose given time then a hacker could brute force the passwords if it was really worth it (seems easier to just go hack another company).

...and to think I just signed up with them to complain on their forums about the lack of multi-platform support on various downloadable games.

Why aren't there any serial killers with hacker fetishes?

I'm more worried about a serial killer who uses a hacker to get a list of targets.....

Personally I think this is good. Maybe these big companies will wake the fuck up and stop using DRM and everything when they realise that their policies are making them a target of this generation's hackers who are probably heavy gamers too.

What does DRM have to do with any of this hacking? This latest rash of hacking has no agenda whatsoever behind it, it's just a bunch of idiot script kiddies thinking they are being funny. Besides, if you were a company whose security was compromised, why would that ever make you consider decreasing the amount of security you use? If this did have anything to do with DRM, it would have the exact opposite effect.

Why I think all this hacking is related to the new law of hacking is a war act.

I also think this is good - but for another reason: companies need to wake up and invest in security! More and more data of our lifes get stored somewhere and nowadays, this data is not always secure enough. Of course, there is not 100% guarantee, but technology is good enough to raise the bar close enogh to almost 100%. Years ago, I already crypted my data with pgp and always used the highest possible key length. Today, there are still financial institutions that only alow a 4 digit pin for online banking! So, security is not a question of possibility but of investment. Those hackers often don't need to really think hard to get sensitive data. It's like protecting a child from knife and fork: the child will try to reach it if it can - you only need to take care.

So, each company that gets hacked hopefully learns its lesson and care about its customers personal data ...

Yeah I know my wording was shit, hungover and got a lot of filming to do today but my point was it seems that the big gaming companies are being targeted and it makes me wonder why... There's been a lot of inflammatory stuff online lately about DRM and well, I'm just joining the lines from where I see it.

The thing is.... I never hear about hackers fucking up non DRM places like GOG or whatever small companies. It's always the megacorps.
