I've been taking a break from my usual RPG and dungeon crawling exploits the past few days. I played Star Control for the first time the other night and I had fun. So, I picked up Nexus during this promo since I found out it doesn't require a flight stick. It reminds me of EVE a bit (or EVE reminds me of it). I haven't been playing EVE much though, well not at all lately. However, this game... fucking rocks! I've never played this game before and I'm really enjoying it. I actually feel like I'm controlling a huge star ship. I was standing outside smoking a cigarette earlier while my I left my Stiletto idling quietly in space while thinking over my next move during one of the missions. I hear the ship's computer say something from inside the house. I couldn't quite make it out. So, I opened the door and shouted to my gf, "WTF is that computer saying?" It said it again. She shouts back, "It's saying incoming missle!" I put the cig out fast and ran back to the PC to take evasive maneuvers... -__-

I'm really glad I picked this game up and I feel like I'm going to be spending quite a lot time with it. Are there anymore titles like this that anyone can recommend? Thanks.

Alright, I have to ask.

Why did you ask if a flightstick is needed? Isn't that something for flight sims?

Sorry if I sound daft, but that has been bothering me since you asked in the other thread.

(Btw, yes Nexus is AWESOME).

I wasn't aware how the game played. I was thinking it was going to be like Freespace or something along those lines. I have heard of Nexus, but really didn't know too much about it.

ETA: Really, I've never played any of the space/flight sims. I have some of the games, but have never settled on a flight stick.

I'll damned second this inquiry!

(Although I reckon I'll have many, many hours of fun with this one still)

The only game I've personally played that I can compare Nexus to is EVE. I got burned out on EVE pretty quickly though because it felt like it was turning into a job. I play games to relax, not have the burden of another full time job on my hands. I was doing some reading though and saw Homeworld 1&2 suggested on another forum. I've never played either of those so I really don't know, but looking at screenshots they do look interesting. Starfleet Command was recommended as well. I know nothing about it either. So, maybe Nexus and EVE are in their own little niche. I don't know, but there should be more space games like this. I mean they have taken the command portion of flying a massive star ship through space and simplified it to the point where it's damn near as intuitive as driving a car down the road. However, it's not so simple that it's boring. It's brilliant!
I've just picked up Nexus but haven't played it - many mention the Homeworld series, which I have played and is very good, as being somewhat similar. Another tactical/strategic starship game which I keep meaning to play (is on GOG) is Haegemonia:

I have just started with the "space" games which I was never really interested in before. I got all the GOG Wing Commanders because they were on sale but have not tried them yet. Got Masters of Orion and kinda like 2 but still just learning. Nexus looks awesome. Would like to find a good Star Trek mod for it.

Yes, I was looking Haegemonia, but I'm not quite sure how it plays. Will have to watch some LPs to get a better idea.

If I'm not mistaken the only Wing Commander game I have is Privateer and I haven't spent enough time with it yet. I have the MoO series, but they are a different breed of space game. I just picked up Nexus during the last Gem Promo. I can wholeheartedly recommend this game even if you think you might only be remotely interested in it. I wasn't sure what to expect when I started playing it, but it's been a really great experience so far.

While they aren't strategy games the X series can be a good if you like sci-fi space sandbox games slightly similar in some aspects to a single player version of EvE. The most recent one is called X3: Terran Conflict and has a more recent "expansion" called Albion Prelude. There really aren't that many modern games in the genre but I'd say the X series is one of my favorites of the recent modern titles.

It's much closer to Homeworld than Nexus quite frankly. Well, Sins of a Solar Empires, actually, it's kind of 4X-ish. I think you'll have a really hard time finding a game similar to Nexus.

There's always Rules of Engagement 1&2.
