So I recently joined GoG, having a blast with Alpha Centauri and Fallout, brings back fond memories. This may seem like a silly question but when you buy games from GoG are they automatically patched to the newest version, like Steam? Thank you.

They're patched to the newest official versions. Any unofficial patches/fixes would have to be downloaded (Fallout has some of those).
They are, but there aren't typically further patches as most of the time the source doesn't exist any longer.

The one annoyance is that GOG sometimes fixes it's installer and there's no official way of knowing if that's the case.
No question is silly.

Yes, the games are patched to the newest version..
Well Steam will automatically update your game if and when a patch is released. All of GOG's releases except for the Witcher 2 are old enough that there aren't any official patches being released anymore, so there's not much need for new installers.

With the Witcher 2, they updated the installer when they released the 2.0 patch, but if you'd already installed the game, it wasn't automatic or anything, and if you downloaded the old installer it would install the 1.0 version. They just updated the download for the installer. Lots of people have both the 1.0 installer and the 2.0 installer saved.

Like most people have said it's the newest version WITH a few exceptions, The Temple of Elemental Evil, for example, is the newest patch for which the mod community made all the most popular mods.

Still, they're not normally the shipped versions of any of the games, the most stable (and usually most recent) patch will generally be already applied.
Okay thank you very much to everyone who replied. :)
