Exciting news for Roleplay Fans. It appears that Baldurs Gate is going to be re-released in an enhanced edition (ETA this Summer).

Dont let us down GOG - get your agents out and organise a nice deal for us.

Does this mean I'll have to stop messing around with TUTU every time I want to play?

This is welcome news and I would be more than willing to purchase BG again (like for the 5th time). And get ready all you modders out there; Let's see how long it takes after this is re-released for a Planescape mod to hit the torrents.
I will buy it if GoG gets their hands on it.

For some past discussion on it :)

Supposedly they're going to look in to other distributors now as well rather than restricting it to Beamdog, so that's a good thing :)

Yes but who knows what this will mean for the literally dozens of weidu-based mods which are compatible with Tutu, which in some cases add new NPC's and quests. They might upgrade the textures and make the game native with all common widescreen resolutions (Tutu can already be widescreen modded anyway), but the new version might break compatibility for literally a decade of fan-modding work on the original BG.

Either way though, it can't hurt though, I would just keep two installs of the games.
I'm not excited.
If they were going for a remake, I would be.
If they were going for BG3, I would also be.
This... is looking like they're trying to milk a dead cow.
With the various easy to run and install mods out there for BG 1+2 and Icewind Dale 1+2 I never really saw the point of this enhanced edition. For me the games are perfect as they are. The only benefits I can see are exposure to a newer generation of gamers who haven't played these games. Especially after the release of LegendOG and the resurge of interest in older games.

Still, I'll be watching the progress and various discussions from time to time and I hope it goes well for those involved.
If GOG cant get the EE's of these ill still get them but not at full price

Thing is, it's not like they're going to stop selling the original versions of BG, and it's not like they're automagically going to disable your existing copy. They're marketing this to people who are new to old-school Infinity Engine-based RPGs and mobile users.

For now, I don't see this (too much) as trying to milk a dead cow, at least not yet. (We'll see if they put in DRM and introduce stupid DLC into the mix.) With a whole new crop of people being exposed to these great games, this can only be a good thing. I never saw the reason why people were so absolutely hateful towards this project and Overhaul for doing it...especially since Overhaul *are* the people who made these games.

Wait, are you saying Overhaul are people from Bioware?

Probably going to get ninja'd, but yeah:

http://www.overhaulgames.com/

We are Overhaul Games. since we got our start at Bioware we've made a few games, met a few friends, and now we're back working on the games we love. For years we've wanted to continue our journey on Baldur's Gate, and now after months negotiations we get to do just that.

We're located in Edmonton along fashionable Whyte Avenue, down the street from the original Bioware office.
It sort of makes sense since their first game was an HD remake of MDK2, also a Bioware title (and a title they were very emotionally close to). And their main digital distributor, Beamdog, was founded by Bioware co-founder Trent Oster and Cameron Tofer, a former Bioware lead programmer.

Sorry, perhaps I didn't express myself too well.
I'm not hateful towards the project OR Overhaul.
I just don't see the point (for me as an BG Veteran) for this.
Although I can CERTAINLY see the point as of why they (as a company) are going for it.
Perhaps I'll buy it just to honor the BG franchise. Let's see how this turns out to be.

No no, I didn't mean you, I meant the people on the other thread who believed that the developers somehow owed them something because they were the self-proclaimed "true fans" of those games, and God forbid that those unwashed masses of tablet users get a chance to enjoy those games too, because they're unworthy.

It's that sort of mentality which I point to as "entitlement", and it's that sort of mentality which is holding gaming back. Anyway, sorry. /rant.

Edit: Sorry, I was thinking of another thread discussing BG/BG2EE, not the one linked to earlier.

It'll be interesting to see what the "Enhanced Editions" actually are, but frankly at least BG1 isn't that good to me that I'd buy an enhanced remake of it. It's ok I guess, I am right now arriving to Baldur's Gate itself (just cleared the Firewine Ruins which was a real bitch!!!).

Actually, if they add a working mission log system, and fix the path-finding problems especially indoors and in mazes, I might be a bit more interested.

gameon: Like what would happen if overhaul games did a system shock 2 hd version.....it would technically not be the original version, but might be able to be sold on digital distribution?
It'd be a derivative work though, which would just move the licensing worries from the DDs to Overhaul.
