Ok, I understand that this is a genre dominant on consoles but even there there is just so few of such games. Why don't we have as many of those titles as it used to be? I would love to see some on GOG as they were what gaming was mainly about back in the days. If somebody could develop games in the spirit of Double Dragon, Streets of Rage or even Fighting Force I would certainly buy them.
I haven't seen beat em ups for ages - true but fighting games made a serious comeback. A ton on consoles and a decent bunch on PC: Street Fighter (hail to the king :)) SFxTekken, Mortal Kombat, Skullgirls - soon.

SangHee: snip
You can buy the Street of Rage games for PC from GG.
The Sega Genesis Gold CD Rom has a few good ones (most notably Streets of Rage 1 & 2) I picked up the rom but I'm pretty sure Steam has all of them, if you are that desperate. :P

I don't think beat'em'ups/fighting games were ever "what gaming was mainly about". Yes, there were more of them once, but certainly not anywhere near 50% of released games.
Yeah, I miss beat'em ups, as well. The last one I played and enjoyed was a freeware game called Little Fighter 2 (http://lf2.net/), which is surprinsigly good. I heard Abobo's Big Adventure (http://abobosbigadventure.com/fullgame.php), which is also free, is worth playing, too.
I guess Zeno clash counts as a modern remake of the beat'em up genre.

There's always Fist Puncher...
The Shank games are kind of Streets of Rage-ish too
And try Hammerfight for a very different take on a fighting game!

I'd recommend Comix Zone too. A nice beat'em'up in a refreshingly different setting. (even if the game is a bit on the easy side)

That's in the Sega collection I mentioned.

I've not played it but AD&D: Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone is meant to be fighty too

I would love to see more beat em ups. Played a lot of em growing up, and they are tons of fun.
