Basically a developer was disappointed with the latest sim city (I think most people were) he decided to build his own.

Offline - Singleplayer - User mods etc etc.

Some articles here.

I was not aware of this project, thanks for the info, looks promising!
I like how he lists everything the new Simcity is not in his "vision":

It will be a single-player game that works completely offline.
The goal is to simulate one whole, huge region at once - no need for tiny city lots or artificial city interaction dynamics.
It will be affordable and will not rely on DLC.
Alpha and Beta versions will be available for a reduced price.
Moddability will be a priority, not an afterthought.
One-man dev project for something of this scope.... unless he gets funding and hires a team my vaporware senses are tingling
yeah. I even like his current prototype style for some reason :P
If he can produce this game, I'll purchase it. It has all the requirements I need, and none of the crap I hated about the new Sim City.
How the guys at Maxis/EA could get everything so wrong about why everyone loved the previous games I have no idea. But they better implode that piece of crap and start again if they ever want to see a penny of my money. I'm glad I didn't go all nostalgic and preorder that mess.
The question is if the outcome will indeed be better in case there will come out a game at all? It's a big job and a single person might not get far. But if there comes out something that is reasonably good I'll buy it.

Since it's still only a vision, a lot of work is ahead. I mean A LOT. I'll check out this one in 2-3 years time, we'll see what it becomes.
Yeah I won't hold my breath but I will say good luck to the guy.

Others have tried and failed (IMHO). E,g,. Cities XL is a good attempt yet fails to capture the old simcity magic.
I like the idea but I won't hold my breath.
I'd totally buy a "real sequel" to SimCity 4.

edit. Without DRM, of course :D
