Isn't the "Free to Play" model just a revamped and reimagined Shareware system?

You get the base game for free, but if you want additional features you have to pay for them. Just instead of a flat $20 charge, it's a bunch of micro charges.

Seems that the Shareware system worked pretty well for PC games for awhile.

I have no problem with the Free to Play system. In fact, for MMO's I think it's a great idea. What I have a problem with is the stupid consumers who use credit cards to buy in game hats and other useless accessories. Opening up part of the game world? Okay, I can see buying that. Buying a new class or race? I can see buying that. Paying real money for a modified set of armor no better then you'd find through grinding? Not so much.
Gas Powered Games boss Chris Taylor refuses to spend $50 on a video game.

...

Those who want to can expand their game by buying content packs, priced between $5 and $15.

Mentalepsy: Interesting. I don't spend $50 on video games, either. I pay between $5 and $15. Like, for the whole thing.
If you get in on the tail end of one of these I bet you'd pay a fraction of that price too.

Well, shareware often ended up being nagware and/or shutting off after awhile. My f2p experiences have been much, much better than most of my shareware experiences. I've never paid a dime for Angry Birds (Android version is free), I've paid for things in Dungeons and Dragons Online, I dislike systems like Wizard 101 where you're essentially locked out of anything above 10th level, as it's premium, there's no other way to access it. It's essentially a demo (though I guess you can keep doing the same stuff over again, there's little point).

We'll see. If his $15 addons drop to $2-3 after a few years, or if they're bundled together with newer addons, then he'll have a point - at least insofar as you compare it to MMOs or expansion-happy single-player games.
