Isn't the "Free to Play" model just a revamped and reimagined Shareware system?
You get the base game for free, but if you want additional features you have to pay for them. Just instead of a flat $20 charge, it's a bunch of micro charges.
Seems that the Shareware system worked pretty well for PC games for awhile.
I have no problem with the Free to Play system. In fact, for MMO's I think it's a great idea. What I have a problem with is the stupid consumers who use credit cards to buy in game hats and other useless accessories. Opening up part of the game world? Okay, I can see buying that. Buying a new class or race? I can see buying that. Paying real money for a modified set of armor no better then you'd find through grinding? Not so much.
