Roamed the post-apocalyptic landscape before it was cool!

Wasteland 1 - The Original Classic, a post-apocalyptic open world full of awe and danger, as imagined in a 1988 RPG, is available 60% off on GOG.com. That's only $2.39 for the next 24 hours.

They say that ever since the nuclear holocaust, America is no longer a place for heroes. They say, that it is no longer the land of the free. Son, that's a goddamn lie, that's what it is. In the atomic wasteland of the year 2087, there is still room for bravery, justice, and order. There are men and women standing guard to what is left of civilized society, facing villains, mutants, bandits, and monsters on daily basis. When everyone else just gave up, they roam the ruins of our nation's sinful past, and do the impossible to bring law back to the badlands. They are the Desert Rangers, and this here, is their story.

Back in 1988 Wasteland 1 - The Original Classic (or just Wasteland back then) took the fresh memory of living in constant fear during the Cold War, reached for the aesthetics of the Mad Max movies, added solid cRPG mechanics, and offered gamers an experience that would soon inspire a whole gaming sub-genre. The open-ended free-roam gameplay, paired with incredibly rich and suggestive setting made a lasting impression on everyone who dared to visit the nuclear desert. With challenging difficulty level and great variety of NPCs, quests, and locations, this fantastic title is still a blast to play! The game comes with the official Wasteland Survival Guide, a quick-reference card, and a music album to set the mood for your post-apocalyptic adventure.

Do you remember playing this title, or maybe you'd like to see how the gaming post-apo craze has begun? Pick the slightly updated version of Wasteland 1 - The Original Classic, for only $2.39, on GOG.com. The 60% off discount offer lasts until Tuesday, February 4, at 10:59AM GMT.
Great game well worth the play and a classic game in every sense.
Mutants. Again. Even more than there were last time: they seem to materialize out of the very grains of the radioactive desert sand. Venomous yellow eyes. The black gunmetal glint of Uzis as they close in for the kill. There's nowhere to run, and nothing to rely on but your MAC 17 machine gun. What a way to save the human race.

I have to say, this description on the gamecard is a bit odd, considering that mutants were never the threat in the Wasteland universe, they are mindless beasts that just want to eat people. The real threat comes from somewhere else entirely.

That's actually why I prefer Wasteland universe over Fallout, no intelligent mutants as a stand-in for Orcs/Ogres.
Great promo with bonus content.
War, War never changes, except when its 60% off!
Since I am a backer of Torment: Tides of Numenera, a couple of months ago inXile Entertainment gave me a code to redeem the original Wasteland on GoG, and I must say that, despite the age, the granfather of post-apocalyptic RPGs is still miles ahead of many so-called modern RPGs, and really has plenty to show. If you have not played it yet, it would surely be a worthy purchase: so says a gamer that wasn't even born in 1988. Just remember to assign functions to the F1-12 keys ASAP!

You prefer zombies over orcs ? ;)
Totally awesome, I'm playing it right now :D
Fallout can undergo right holder changes, sure. But Wasteland. Wasteland never changes. :P

Same question here. I got it from backing Wasteland 2 but have yet to install it. I fear that it is not quite easy to play such an old game. For example, I can't play Ultima IV at all: it seems it is too old for me.

At first you might find it very hard, but in my opinion it is just the clunky interface. Nothing that cannot be overcome in just an hour or two of play, anyway. If you give your characters an high intelligence score and a the brawling skill at the beginning, you should have no problems. Remeber that there is no automatic use of items, so if you want to make an action you must always select a character and then specify what to use or do. I suggest you give a quick read to the manual before starting, especially to the "macros setup" section.

More like wild animals than zombies.

And no, I just liked that mutants in Wasteland are just beasts on the periphery and they play no major part in the game or story.

As a kid and a big fan of the Bard's Tale-esque games (which this sort of looked like at first glance) I had a hard time getting through this one. But mainly, that's 'cause you had to think more. Looking back on it, it has a great story, flexible play, and it really was ahead of the genre. It's on my shelf and I'm looking forward to diving into it and then the remake when time allows :)
Ok I will buy it will give it ago
