I know this would probably be better placed over on the Steam forums but frankly I don't have an account there and don't want to make one if itt's at all possible, So I turn to the colective gurus of GOG for advice.

What with all the Oblivion mod talk lately I thought it would be a good idea to erase my Oblivion install and start a new, clean one I can try out some new mods on. Only trouble is, what Steam gives me is a backup of my deleted stuff. So is there a way to go all the way back and get a completely clean, vanilla install of Oblivion?

My sincerest thanks will go to anyone who can help me out with this.

Delete the Oblivion folder from within the "...steam/steamapps/common/" folder and reinstall the game ?

Not sure if i fully understand the bit about "steam gives me a backup of my deleted stuff" though.
You could delete the game from Steam app too if you already installed it. Right click and choose delete local files. or something.

Apologies if I didn't make myself clear enough.

I deleted everything in that folder related to Oblivion but, as I said, when I came to reinstall it -didn't revert to a vanilla game but seemed to have restored a previous back-up.

Ah, gotcha. You deleted it manually or through the "delete local content" shortcut ?

I think he's referring to settings and saves found in Documents.
Use the delete local content tool on Steam, delete everything in the SteamApps/Common/Oblivion folder and then delete or move the folder in My Documents/My Games/Oblivion

The thing in My Documents is where your saves and such are, which is why your save games persist over reinstalls.

The first time, through 'Delete local content'. Though I've now deleted the folder manually and through the Steam app itself, so we'll see what happens.

Vanilla means un-modded (withouth mods) so wiping out the folder manually will definitely delete all mod related files and get you a Vanilla install

If on the ohter hand what you want is to delete your old save games, like Navagon and PenutBrittle mentioned, you'll have to delete those from the Documents folder. Or you can simply ignore them, start a new game and overwrite the old saves with new ones as needed.

Edit: Typo's

Ah, deleting everything manually and using the Delete local Content button in Steam seems to have fixed things. As thanks for taking the time to help I've repped you all.

One of these days I'm going to actually sit down and play Morrowind properly. For some reason I can never get properly into it.

Any mods you can recommend, aside from the obvious ones that are doubtless mentioned in the dedicated Oblivion Mods thread? ;) I may actually install some texture packs this time, so long as they don't slow my machine down too badly.

I'm not a big TES fan and i never took a very in depth look at mods for Morrowind or Oblivion so there's probably a number of folks around here that should be alot more helpful on the subject than me ;)

In any case, i've finished installing "Morrowind Graphics and Sounds Overhaul" and patching it up to 1.3 and i can tell you that it was a somewhat long process but definitely worthile, the game looks better than what i thought it was possible. I'm now in the process of looking for other mods that won't mess up MGSO, there's a short mods compatility list on the MGSO boards, i'm going over it atm.

Most of the good ones are covered there. I never much cared for the rebalancing patches and mods (OOO and such), I prefer the quest mods. Off the top of my head the Lost Spires is a really good quest mod for when you run out of Vanilla content. That was my favourite, but there are lots of good quest mods here.

As for texture replacers I'm not really sure. But Unique Landscapes is good, yet unfinished. You can get that here.

Also get a UI mod. Darns UI is what I used cause I played Oblivion back at release, but Immersive UI and Dark UI are also good.

I'm sure there are other must haves in other categories.
