Hi all,
Is there any games like "Close Combat, a bridge too far" out there?
I have a dell m101z ... no cd drive of course.

I remember this as a kid ... many years ago and got a real kick playing it!

I'm not smart enough (cant be bothered) with cd emulation shadow drives and what not!

Any Ideas?

Any thing on GOG that is simular ie real time statagy?

You could try Combat Mission - Beyond overlord. It's a nice turn based / real time tactical game. You give out orders during the turn based phase, then start the clock and see what happens during the real time phase. It feels more realistic that way, since you don't usually give out orders with such precision like in close combat. I'm a long time fan of CC games, and I can tell you you'll feel right at home with that game, unless the interface kills you first ;-)

i agree with titanium, combat mission is fun but not exactly the same type of game as close combat.

if price is not a problem for you you might want to check out matrixgames.com where they sell remakes of all close combat games, with cc: last stand arnhem (formerly a bridge too far) being the last installment in the series. unfortunately by "remakes" i mean just polished so don't expect a total overhaul.

another idea is achtung panzer: kharkov 1943 which people describe as close combat in 3D. i haven't played it myself but there should be a demo.

cheers to a fellow cc2 fan! :)
You might be interested, if you happen to find, in Eric Young's Squad Assault: Westfront. It is quite similar in core ideas to the Close Combat series.

Yeah,
a lot of people don't realize it, but the Close Combat series is still going. Matrixgames.com publishes it, and there have been about 7 games in the series released since A Bridge Too Far.
There are 5 Close Combat games availableon their site now. One of them is called Last Stand Arnhem. Arnhem is Operation Market Garden, which is the setting of A Bridge Too Far, so essentially, it's a modern remake of the game you are looking for.
As far as games on GOG.com go, you can't go wrong with Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord. It's often regarded as the best wargame ever made, and its interface is based on Close Combat's. It isn't a real-time game. It's an "at the same time" game. It's turn based, but you and the enemy take turns simultaneously. It gives it more of a real time feel, but without the hectic pace of a real-time game. Both games should run on your laptop. Close Combat will perform better.

As deelee says, Close Combat is now owned by Matrix, and they have released upgraded versions of all the games in the system (except for the first, and the FIfth game ,Close Combat Normandy was pretty much a remake of the first) in improved versions, with all the games including the additons made to the system as time went on, and a lot of new scenrrios and campaigns (The Longest day, For instance, Now includes all the D Day Beaches, and adds the British, which CC Normandy never did).
They price is around 30 to 40 dollars a game,,a fair price considering you are getting a vastly improved and in many ways new game using the system.
Many thanks for the replys ... I will give Matrix games a look as well as the gog titles...
Many thanks o-q
