Hi folks, this should be a painfully easy question to you lot but it's got me foxed: how do I connect my laptop to a TV with HDMI connection when the laptop doesn't have a HDMI port?

I gather that I'll need a cable that goes into my DVI port, and there are two kinds, but for the life of me I cannot seem to work out which cable I need. I've attached a photo of what I think is the DVI port below so can you guys tell me exactly what I need and (if you're feeling generous) post a link to Amazon.co.uk so I can start pricing these things up. Thanks a lot!

You're going to need a VGA to HDMI adapter or cable. DVI to HDMI is certainly possible, but I'm not so sure about VGA to HDMI.

EDIT1: VGA is analogue, whereas DVI and HDMI are digital, so I'm pretty sure it'll be difficult or impossible.

EDIT2: Turns out that there are converters that you plug a VGA and an HDMI cable into. Google for "VGA to HDMI converter".

First of all: How old the notebook is? Most notebooks since like 4 years ago actually have HDMI port, it just looks sort of like ... Round-ish USB port.

And second thing: That there is VGA, not DVI. That's what makes things complicated.
The thing is, you can't solve it with just a cable, as VGA is an analogue signal whereas HDMI is a digital one, so you'll also need an adaptor/convertor, and those run pretty expensive.

That's a VGA port. You need If you have a DVI. If you only have a VGA you need something like [url=http://www.amazon.co.uk/Neet%C2%AE-Converter-Supports-Computer-Lifetime/dp/B002C6NP5C/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1326367122&sr=1-1]this.

Note that neither VGA or DVI ports output audio, which means a separate cable for audio. You'll need to check if your TV has an audio input for an HDMI connection, which most don't. Best option may be VGA to VGA with separate audio if your TV has a VGA in, which it might.

What laptop is it (make/model), and what TV?

I can tell you right now that this laptop definitely does not have an HDMI port at all. It's pretty new, and the specs are quite good, but the connectivity is... lacking, to say the least (only two USB ports, for example)

Thanks anyway guys, if it's going to be expensive then I can just do without ;)

Rep for you all anyway, and thanks again.
It might be easier to find a TV with a VGA port than a converter.

The laptop is a Toshiba C660-1D7. The TV.... not a clue ;) Some generic cheapo supermarket own-brand thing. Sorry I can't be more specific than that. Here's a link : http://www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-Satellite-C660-1D7-Notebook-Processor/dp/B004K6MEO0

ok, looks like VGA out is your only option on that model, so check if the tv has a similar port on it... If it does, you can connect them quite cheaply.

tomdelada: ...
You might also take a look at USB converters

I bought a HDMI card for my laptop but I don't see that yours has the required card slot so this is my suggestion. . . =)

Edit: I am not recommending this particular converter as I don't use it but just saying they are available.
