This fan remake definitely deserves a thread. Watch the latest video here, on the game's ModDB profile:

Privateer's Hold is so faithfully recreated, it almost brings a tear to one's eye ;)
Looks great.

Daggerfall is a game which I wanted to play for real for ages but then when I did, I was disappointed by it, however. Great ideas, fun combat, amazing atmosphere .. all crippled by dull interiors, copy/paste NPCs, random dungeons that feel weird instead of grand and auto-leveling of monsters. If they made proper dungeons and removed auto leveling here, it might be a lot better than the original.
It was a very fun ARPG though. You never know what you're going to run into next in a dungeon, or when you'll start to fall through a little gap in the dungeon floor and end up in infinite space :X

I still remember those damn Ancient Vampires, really scary things. They're the only NPCs I never got around to killing, even though by the time I stopped playing, I'd already owned several residential properties and had pretty high end equipment. Good times.
You're not paying attention. He's not remaking the game, he's creating a new engine to run the original game. That's why Privateer's Hold is so the same.

He's doing the same with Dark Forces. Both projects are awesome!
As Falci said, it's Engine Remake not remake of entire game. It'll still need data files from original Dagerfall game.

DaggerXL 0.19 just came out btw. It adds character creation.

Also DarkXL is nearing beta stage. This means that game is almost feature complete and can be completed using DarkXL.

Ah. My bad. I thought he was doing the whole thing from scratch.
I thought it was very cool of Bethesda to release Daggerfall free on the 15th anniversary of The Elder Scrolls. At the same time, I wish they had put at least a little effort in the release. It was basically just a "drag and drop" of files and folders from the CD zipped up. They at least should have built a proper .iso and released it - especially considering how this game is one of the few DOS titles back then with a strict case sensitive requirement for the CD's label. If the CD's label was anything other than "Daggerfall" exactly, it wouldn't recognize it (i.e. no DAGGERFALL or daggerfall). I remember burning a few Frisbee's over this when I got my first burner (old 2x) trying to back it up.
Also considering how much talent and manpower they have, it really would've taken only a little bit more (5 to 10min max) to go ahead and release it already configured in DOSBox.

For some reason Bethesda took the link down. I was kind of hoping that was a sign it might be coming here with the possibly of some juicy goodies and extras with it.

In case some may have missed the freeware release and can't find the links, here is a nice easy setup that's wrapped around that freeware release with other mods and enhancements. DaggerXL can be played with it as well.
New version released of DaggerXL, this one adds dungeon support for most of the dungeons.
Might be interesting to some, perhaps.
Sounds interesting, ive never played the earlier Elder Scrolls games, didnt really know about TES until Morrowind. Think ill hold off for them to hit the beta stage and then give the mod a try. Will definitely look into that Dark Forces remake, loved that game as a kid.
looks pretty interesting and cool
