Luisfius: It had more friendly characters, and yeah, the tone in Dark is more cheerful. In Demon's the world is DYING. In Dark, the world is merely stagnating, but not dying, not yet anyways. To say more would be to spoil a lot.

Elmofongo: Yeah and not only that there are some cartoony enemies aswell like the mimic:

I think the Mimic kind of ends up on the horrifying end of the cartoony spectrum though. I mean, yeah, it's not as horrifying as basically every enemy in Latria in Demon's, but it's still pretty creepy.

But yeah, overall Dark does have a less consistently oppressive tone to it. I think that actually lends a bit more replayability to it, as well. Plus there're "relief" characters like Seigmeyer.
Stupid question, about quitting.

Can I just quit anywhere and keep my souls?

Yeah. The game autosaves constantly and does so when you quit, so you can quit anywhere. If you quit in a boss battle, you'll reload outside of the fog, but otherwise you end up in exactly the same place (with any surviving enemies reset to their starting position).

Almost anything you can do is auto saved, even from just changing your weapon.

Thats one of the challeging side of the game is there sre no fixed saves, once you do something there is no turning back to correct it.

Ugh..

I might play both Souls games once a working PS3 emulator is released. :-)

Or you could you know read guides or watch walkthroughs, there is no shame in that.

The best part about the mimic was the flying jump-kick.
That, and the fact that you could get it's head as a random drop for a helmet.
Nothing better than moseying around wearing a big-ass chest on your head with the tongue sticking out.

Or just deal with actual consequences. The only thing that the constant autosaving really means is that aggroed friendlies won't un-aggro, and you shouldn't be running around attacking vendors anyway.
Played on console and its amazing
PC port I have no idea sorry

I bought it during the same Amazon deal you did, loaded it, and said "screw this" after about 5 minutes of trying to get the controls to work, along with seeing the horrible console port. The port reminds me of Ninja Blade, only worse.

After playing 2-3 games for 2 hours or so each and finding myself "meh" about them all, then reading this thread, I decided to give it another go. I'm glad I did. I took time to try and figure out the KB+M controls, but after doing that for an hour, I concluded I wasn't getting anywhere and bought a wired 360 controller. It made all the difference in the world and I can safely say I'm really happy with the game, so far anyway.

Unless things change mid-game, I don't really see the game as unfair. I can account for every death I have had so far and see that my screwing up was the cause. There is little room for error, but I kindof like that, it keeps you on your toes and requires that you learn your opponents technique before rushing into battle. I feel like I've played games that are far more unfair than this (Ninja Gaiden, for example) and less rewarding.

There are some tedious parts, mostly the save/death system, but I think it would defeat the purpose of the game if you were allowed to save all the time. That said, I do find GFWL annoying and the interface horrible for a PC port. As mentioned before, the port itself is really pitiful, it blows me away that someone was paid to port this game to PC and did such a pisspoor job of it.

Anyway, I'm happy with it for $20. I'm not sure I'd pay more than that at this point, though. If they can make the PC port better, I'd probably say it's worth a more.

Shinook: *Shnip*
Definitely install DSFix, if you haven't. Makes the port waaay less bad. And yeah, I can only think of a couple of moments where the diffiulty's more cheap than fair (the red dragon on the bridge the first time, the curse frogs...).

Good to know, I'll keep you guys posted on what I think as I go on, I'm not that far in yet.

Hopefully I won't bust another TV/monitor, I got so mad at Ninja Gaiden that I threw the controller across the room and broke the dust screen on our TV :(

I'll probably do that too but nowadays I've no tolerance for replaying parts I've already finished and emulators usually offer state saves.

Go talk to Oswald, he'll delete your sin for a fee and you will be on friendly terms with the aggroed npc.
