There were a couple topics on this, but since they've derailed..
Hi. I made this: http://iki.fi/sol/ddhack/ (among other things). It could be, in theory, be used to make other old 256c windows games work better on modern windows. Actually, the 256c isn't a requirement as such, but higher-color directdraw games probably work as is. I think. Maybe.
I'm not, however, planning on doing any further work on it, firstly because it was taking a lot of my time as is, and secondly because I usually don't happen to own the games people are complaining about.
If someone (like the GoG staff) wants to pick it up and continue hacking, they have my blessing. All source code, including the wrapper project, which can be used to figure out what's going on in said games, is released under a very liberal license.
If I were to develop it further, a few things need to happen, first of which is myself getting all those back-logged critical projects out of the way..
