So suddenly and out of nowhere my desktop shortcut icons for my GoG games, and GoG games only, had admin shields added to their bottom right corners (on a Win7 desktop). I know it's not a serious thing, I'm just curious why they appeared out of nowhere and how I can get rid of them. Any input would be great.

They've had them for some time now. You can get rid of them by either changing them not to run in admin mode, or you can change the UAC setting.

So it's been on all my icons the whole time and I only just noticed it? Could I have recently inadvertently changed a setting that wouldn't have shown them as I swear I haven't seen them before (though I could be wrong?)

*EDIT* I'm pretty sure I never had them - anyone care to narrow down what I could have altered, by accident and easily (I haven't been playing with settings today), that would have caused only the shields on GoG games on my desktop shortcuts to display?

As far as I'm aware it's not easy to remove the admin shield (unless you turn off the UAC). I don't think it's something you could do by accident. You either need a program like Microangelo On Display or you need to hack the resources of a dll (which you definitley can't do by accident).

Would it have been easy for me to turn off UAC settings, but just for the GoG shortcuts on my desktop or is that a global type setting that I could only turn off for my entire computer? I'm just trying to narrow this down before I concede that I've been looking at those shields for the last two weeks and not seeing them ;)

You can only do it globably (for all applications) or on each individual icon one at a time. Do you remeber having to allow your games to run as admin before (it should show a yes/no dialog every time it's run)? If so then UAC was turned on and so there should have been an icon.
I think UAC WAS turned on, but it wasn't applicable to my GoG shortcuts until tonight for some reason. Even when I unclick "run as admin" in the shortcut, I can execute the program without input (clicking yes or no) but the Shield still remains. I KNOW it wasn't there before and I'm really confused as to why it appeared, and why I can't turn it off / get rid of it.

I don't want to alter my UAC settings, just the settings on these shortcuts (I have about 5 or 6 other game shortcuts on my desktop that DON'T have the shield) and was wondering what I can do to get rid of it on my GoG shortcuts, short of altering my global UAC settings. I wish I knew what the heck I did to add it to all my GoG desktop shortcuts in one go, when they hadn't been there before, without adding it to my non-GoG game shortcuts :(
Well after a bit of messing about... my icons "lost" the shortcut icon that didn't have a shield added. So I was able to assign Admin Privs to the shortcut and the target and then select a new icon for the shortcut from the GoG folder, that DIDN'T have the shield on it. For the life of me I STILL don't know how I lost the non-shielded (LOL) icon location in the first place and why it only hit certain shortcuts, but at least I now have Admin level, "clean looking" desktop icons. Thanks for the help!

*edit* And errrr bummer Chris I wanted to give "Solved" credit to both of you because you pointed me in the right direction, but it looks like the forums only accept one solution :(
