Vitek: No they are not. You can have sex with chocolate ice cream. :-P
Or pastrami and TV for that matter

Oslin007: Conclusion: I need to get THief 1 and 2 right now! you said it was hard getting to work on a modern computer, just HOW hard is it? im not that much of a technical geek... still i managed to get the steamversion of DS working and THAT was quite tricky! DEP (Data Execution Prevention) exceptions and everything. Still, i would be glad to get some advices for how to get THief 1 and 2 working on windows 7:)
Here are 2 links I found helpful...

Another link. Actually this is the one I followed most closely. It has nice step-by-step instructions for T1 & T2.

Maybe try local retail? For example, around here it's still quite easy to get Thief Anthology for around 14 PLN (~3.5 EUR).
Thief 1 : Dark Project is available on GamersGate for 9.99€ or £9.95.

That should work, but note that there are 2 different versions of Thief2.exe floating around due to there being a European patch and a US patch. To be sure, I'd hex-edit the thief2.exe file so that it points to the ddfix.dll (which is all the pre-patched exe does). But definitely give the pre-patched EXE file a go first :)

If the (excellent) link Shahrazad points to doesn't work, then let us know and we can help out - the more taffers, the better :)

Edit - by the way, since GOG likes DRM-free things, I'll mention that Thief Gold has no DRM, not even a CD-check, once it's installed.

Magnitus: Eww.... to each his own.

I am quite happy to keep the pleasure of food and the pleasures of a woman's body separate in my brain and frankly, the less my food touches the human body, the happier I am.
You are too prude.
You should widen your horizons.

Speaking of retail, I actually ordered a copy of Thief 1 from eBay a few months ago. Package got lost in the mail. D:

I did get refunded, which is good, but it's still not as good as me laying my hands on the box of the game......

We all our our threshold of prudeness. It's a relative thing.
You people dare compare Thief games to me!? Blasphemy!!!

lowyhong: Deadly Shadows is a decent game in its own right, but it has nothing on the first two Thief games. I enjoyed it a lot though. If I were to assign it a numerical score, it would be 85/100.

Anyway back to your question, it really depends on how tolerant you are towards a very outdated engine. Casting aside nostalgia, after having played The Dark Mod (the real Thief 4), certain features such as mantling and swimming really start to show signs of the engine's aging. It's still a brilliantly designed game, but if you're used to stuff like HDR, high-poly models and smooth animations, it will take some getting used to.

Thiev: No fondness for creeping up on target? Or hanging back in shadows, memorizing patrol routes? :P

lowyhong: I remember ghosting through the first few levels of Thief II, and then gave up after the part where Garrett got arrested. Or somewhere around there. Ghosting is a lot of fun, but it requires mucho momento.
Oh man now I want to get ahold of a copy of Doom 3 to try that out!
If you're into Thief, definitely get Doom 3 for The Dark Mod. It's excellent, the only possible drawback being the lack of a coherent story since it is a toolset for Fan Mission authors. It's basically the toolset that Deadly Shadows should have been built with.

A bit older, but Thievery mod for UT was also fun, especially for multiplayer sneakiness ;)

Totally worth it. I dare say some of the maps are up there with those made by LGS.
While we are on topic, I was wondering if anybody has gotten the first two thief games to run on Windows 7. I've been meaning to pick these games up for awhile now.

I made a quick attempt to run them on Windows Vista with no luck.

Maybe with some playing around, it could be made to work with the 2 latest renditions of Windows, but I'm not so desperate that I couldn't wait until GOG adds them to their catalog at some point in the future.
