I don't know why you presume to know how a man like that thinks or why he does what he does. The fact is there's companies that do have the money to fork over for Steam and it's downright fucking insane to pretend it will never happen. Gabe is a fat, middle-aged, unhealthy man, he could drop stone cold dead tomorrow (or get horribly ill). And frankly I'm not privy to how ownership in Valve and Steam (which I presume are entirely different legal entities) are divvied up but it might not be how you think and could change at any time.
Well, I don't know about their mob ties but I know they're not very nice, not very well liked, and their market share is dropping. That's probably why Rovio turned them down. However I am trying to illustrate the scale of money we're talking about here and, while 2 billion is high for something like Rovio, you had a company willing to fork over that much for a single dev studio. Impulse got sold and it's not like Gabe has acted any more sane over the years than Wardell did, they're both nucking-futs.

Part of the sale on d2d items at least for the last few yeara is the ability to redownload. As such, they have a contractual obligation to maintain customers access.

They actually have an Adobe secure PDF reading client (Adobe Digital Editions) I had to download to read them. It is a pain and one I am trying to find a way around so if ever Adobe makes something no longer compatible I won't be out of pocket for documents I paid for.

Just another little annoyance for the customer with no effect on the digital criminals. Yay DRM. :)

I don't like those PDF secure guides. Last time I bought one acrobat couldn't open it because of some sort problems .

It's pretty easy to remove any protection from a PDF - there's even websites that let you upload the PDF and remove the security for you. (PDF Unlock I think the site is called).

At work we sometimes have some greedy design bureau who locks the files so they can't be printed or edited so only they could do it (at a big fee too, of course) and we automatically remove all the protections there. Once, one of those bureaus complained to their customer because we had been editing their files and demanded we give them the edited version to them saying they would do the editing from now on. Sooo we encrypted and protected it AND made the PDF in such a way that it wasn't possible to import it in Illustrator <.< Reap what you sow, eh?
