The Pit goes on even deeper now!

Sword of the Stars: The Pit: MindGames DLC, an expansion pack adding two new playable characters, new insane-er gameplay mode, new locations, and new gameplay features to the challenging Sci-Fi roguelike, is available for only $4.99 on GOG.com.

[url=http://www.gog.com/gamecard/the_pit_mindgames_dlc]Sword of the Stars: The Pit: MindGames is a shiny example of DLC that truly deserves to be called an expansion! MindGames adds so much new content and features to Sword of the Stars: The Pit, that it can significantly change the way you play the game. You get two new playable characters, one of which--the telekinetic Psion--is the reason for the pack's title. The second one is the first playable alien--the Tarka Ranger. Two new play modes are being added, one of them allows you to play indefinitely, the other--aptly called "Seriously? Mode"--delivers even higher difficulty level to the hardcore gamers that find the "Insane Mode" falling short of their masochistic expectations. There are ten new levels waiting to be explored, including the new vast biosphere environments. Even the gameplay mechanics experience an overhaul with the addition of XP and item "banking" system, allowing some boost for the starting characters. If you thought you knew The Pit, think again!

For more challenge and depth in your favorite Sci-Fi roguelike, grab Sword of the Stars: The Pit: MindGames DLC on GOG.com for only $4.99. You know you need it!

NOTE:
This version of the DLC works exclusively with the GOG.com DRM-free Sword of the Stars: The Pit game.

Cool, didn't know they were working on a DLC. I'll probably grab it after I find the time to play the original game though... so little time... so little
Hoowah! Unexpected, but welcomed, I guess... Have to dig The Pit (pun intended) out of my backlog first.

But why don't you just call it an expansion? Many people around get their skin with itchy rash when they hear about "DLC" word.
Cool, I was intending to pick the base game up before this sale ends, and I see no reason not to pick this up too for what it offers.
Indeed unexpected, so not cool :-/

While I don't like DLCs I have no problem when GOG want to sell them, everyone should have the option to decide for it's own. But it would be really nice to have that ability to decide by adding an information on the gamespage if a DLC is planned. In that case I would wait for the complete pack in the future.

Edit: Btw, are there any plans to offer and upgrade (for people how own all the DLC)s to a complete version in the future?

what difference would any of that make?! if you own all the DLC, then you already own a "complete" edition of the game.

And while we're at it: Are there any plans for a better integration of the DLCs into the catalogue (e.g. merging with the original game's webpage or at least a DLC category or an option to sort them out when browsing) or is it going to stay this way, with each DLC getting the same space and treatment as a full game, and all of them cluttering the catalogue as individual entries?

What he is saying is that if he knows a game will have DLC he will refuse to buy it unless and until all the DLC has already been released. He wants a heads up on a games page informing people that DLC is coming/planned so he and people like him can avoid the game until that point. He wants to avoid accidentally buying a game with upcoming DLC. As someone who is boycotting GFWL(obviously not applicaple on GOG) I understand where he is coming from. I believe I once bought a game in a bundle on Steam that uses GFWL by accident.

Easier installation. As example, Omerta has already 4 DLCs. To get the full game you need to do five installations (the free DLC comes as update). I don't know if the correct installation order is also important, but it's very likely it will be relevant for other games in the future.

Edit: And like Kristian wrote, I normally also really don't like to buy a pig in the poke.

Well this is over 300MB and it looks like it's more of an "expansion" than DLC. Hopefully GOG learned their lesson from the Omerta shovelware fiasco
That's... an interesting forum thread title... especially if you also count the "NEWS:" part... ^_^

I am once again completely baffled as to why one wouldn't want moar content for games they like.

To me personally, this qualifies as an expansion pack and I've seen a few expansion packs back in the day. However, DLC is the new-fangled term for those, hence the usage. Hope that helps :D

ugh...

and how exactly is GOG supposed to know that? usually the development of DLC is dependent on the game's commercial success. if a game doesn't sell well enough, no DLC will be made. in most cases, GOG wouldn't be able to get an answer from publishers as to whether DLC is coming or not.

yeah, that would be terrible...

how dreadful. come on. you're talking about videogames here. it's not going to scar you for the rest of your life.

that's actually a good point. but then again, this is exactly what PC gaming used to be like; you installed the base game, then half a dozen patches on top of each other, then expansions and patches for the expansions. GOG is just staying retro all the way.

Wow, this game was funded through IndieGoGo but didn't meet even half of its goal, and this expansion was a stretch goal of theirs. Either the base game sold well or they're pretty dedicated dudes to have bothered to make this. Good on them whatever the case, I say.

In terms of the whole DLC integration here on GOG, my preference would be that once you buy any it's added to your installation page of the base game rather than take up space as if they were separate games requiring an install.

As for a heads up on a game's page that may have DLC - I don't think it's as simple as that, at least on launch. A news update about forthcoming DLC would be nice in the future, yes, but, as would appear to be the case here, an expansion pack may not have been on the table when this game was first launched due to them not meeting their funding goal. It'd have been silly to have suggested additional content was planned or being developed as soon as the game was launched. Besides which, some companies don't have any DLC planned at all until their game turns out to be a pretty good success, at which point they then get ideas of expanding on existing content.
