mrcrispy83: Chaos Legion isn't really all that like DMC, though that's how Capcom tried to sell it back in the day. It's more like DW I guess? It's more about crowd control and holding off large numbers of enemies with your ai monster partner long enough to destroy the enemy generators spawning new ones.
I used to play it using the legions on passive mode, which leaves you free to hack & slash. You can still summon them briefly for an emergency, and the active ability of the bomb legion in passive mode (that's tricky) worked wonders for crowd control. It does it's part as an uberguy slaughtering monsters. All in all, I found the combat mechanics quite enjoyable.
I liked that, unlike many of the other games mentioned here (such as DMC) you can't replay levels over and over to farm XP during the campaingn. Not until you get pretty far on the story at least. Plus, if you dig into the formula, you can spend hours upon hours leveling up legions once the replay is active.
