Do people still play COD Modern Warfare 2 on the internet?

Well, according to Steam's statistics, there has been a peak of 8,053 players today. So I would say yes, they do still play it.

When you go to the Steam website, just click the link at the top called STATS. The page shows (only) the top 100-played games, and COD MW2 happens to be up there.

As Bapa said, Steam only displays the top 100. And even if they were on the top 100, it wouldn't be an accurate number because I'm pretty sure you need Steam to play MW2, unlike those games.
