There's a few ways of physically destroying a hard drive, the most effective for home use tends to be to run a powerful magnet across the disks and then have fun hammering the hell out of them. I think I read somewhere that going over them with coarse sandpaper works well.

Once dropped a three hole punch on a laptop hd. They couldn't retrieve one lil bit in a clean room that cost thousands....Think am now master of the art of the two finger death punch?
Really good ol dd will do the job just fine there is absolutely no reason to physically destroy the HDD!
