Leroux: SecuRom on 3rd party games can have a really bad effect on performance or cause other issues.
I have about 10 games with Securom installed on my PC right now, haven't noticed any problems so far. There something specific I should be looking for ?

Nope. "Can have" doesn't mean "always has". You're probably fine in the majority of cases. I'm just talking about my own experience. I had only two games with 3rd party SecuRom and issues with both, so I'm burnt (and biased).

After I experienced game-stopping slowdowns in the first outdoor area of Avadon's SecuRom version from GG, I found out that it's a known issue reported by several users on the Spiderweb Software forums, while the DRM-free shareware version that Jeff Vogel sent me as a compensation ran perfectly fine.

The other issue was more indirect: the GG version of Puzzle Agent suffered from a bug where all menu options were blank, Telltale had fixed this bug in their own version and the Steam version, but not on GG. When I reported it to them, they didn't update the GG version but sent me their own version, more than two weeks after reporting it though, from which I gather that they were not able to quickly replace the version on GG due to it using a different, 3rd party DRM. Because when I talked to a dev from Skygoblin about why The Journey Down had SecuRom on GG, he said that the game didn't have its own DRM and that he wasn't even aware that he had the option to make it DRM-free on GG (they have since removed it). Apparantly GG offered putting SecuRom on the game as a service and the dev thought it was the default choice.

These might not be the best examples (after all I had enough trouble with Telltale's own DRM and their slow customer support to believe the fault may be with the company itself and not with GG), and compared to your 10 working games you might consider it paranoid drivel, but to me personally, these experiences were enough to decide not to spend any more money on games that might include two weeks worth of troubleshooting and waiting before I can finally run them (because I got different versions from the devs, not because the issues with the GG SecuRom versions were sorted out). I didn't have any issues like that with any of the DRM-free games I've bought.

I have problems with Securom on Sacred 2 gold from GG. It crashed ones, and after this it thought my key was invalid and refused to run. Just received a new key from GG, and will try see if it works later.

But Sacred 2 Gold is listed as DRM-Free.

hehe, then it is a mistake. I just uninstalled it as the new key also did not work. I am a bit wary of Securom also. This is the first time it did not work for me, but I know the posibility was there.

I will try re-download and install it later, but at the moment I feel very much like either getting the DRM free fix from Pirat Bay to go with it, or see if it becomes -75% on Steam this sale, it apparently only uses CEG there and no 3d-party DRM.

Edit - Actually, I am going to drop GG a letter about this, thanks for pointing it out.

That's not a mistake it's cheating. After reading this thread I was actually impressed with the amount of GG's DRM-Free catalog, but now...

To err is human. A person is sitting there inputting all these entries. I always give people the benefit of doubt first - it is the first time I have spoted this on GG.

edit - well, I have notfied them now, lets see how it goes.

Hmm... the copy of Sacred 2 Gold I purchased from GG USA last month doesn't appear to need a key. I was not asked for one in the half an hour or so I checked out the game before archiving the distribution files. Everything installed without complaint and my computer disconnected from the network at the time.

Gamersgate offers no key in my library window.

Perhaps they updated the game?

That would be nice, but I wonder why mine is then still with Securom.... and refuse working.

edit - support even gave me a new Securom key yesterday (which did not work...)

Maybe it's a regional thing ?
