While the game will not work on my notebook nor on my desktop pc I really hope there will someday be a steamwork-free version, like Rebellion did it with the old Aliens vs Predator. But to be honest, first Civ5 and now the Duke steamworks-only makes me a little bit sad.

GameRager: You guys are such babies......you DO know you can(tho maybe not fully legally) just torrent a steam free copy after you buy one right? Heck, some can even rip the game files out of their steam directories.
I prefer not to encourage such poor behavior. And pirating, whether or not you own a license for the copy, just encourages companies to put their faith in Steamworks in the first place.

The only way to gain any traction on the issue is to refuse to buy things at anything other than a steep discount to normal list price. Or better yet not buy anything at all from them.

drmlessgames: Steamworks game becomes a possible buy if and only if it gets a $2 holiday sale after its release. Not 2$ off, but the game retails at that.
avatar
hedwards: That's basically my policy. I will occasionally break it if what I'm after is data files, and I can take them from steam for use as I please. But as a general rule, anything more than about $2 is too much for that sort of DRM.
Hey, im glad to find someone that shares that policy. Interesting that the steam portion will be ripped out in the "leaked" duke, and it'll be the same if not better than the steam one.

I personally, think that it's the only sane policy to have. I've been burnt in the past by DRM making it so that I couldn't use something that I paid for. These days, I don't buy unless I can resell and preferably have some assurance that the item will work permanently.

I know they've said that they'll provide patches to remove the DRM if they go under, but I don't trust that. Given that we can't see the contracts they're penning with other companies, I'm suspicious that they even have the right to do so.

Lucibel: ...some Steam files were corrupted so I wasn't able to use offline mode - are there any specific Steam files I can backup to protect against this?
well yes , go to your game
click properties
local data (if im correct)
verify integrity of something

now then.
I want to play the duke a long time.
I started gaming with atari , NES , SNES , SEGA , and then PC
wolfenstein 3d , Hexen , Doom , and then came the duke.
I loved it so much i still know the oneliners in correct order :)

So since steam hasn't failed me "a lot" up untill now i'm ready to buy the game and support the dev's who actually finished the game.
Hopefully a "sequel" won't take a decade then.
So i'll be praying steam doesn't f*ck it up.
Cool, I was expecting something like Ubisoft DRM. Never had an issue with Steam since its easy to rip the files for a backup so I will be getting this on sale I think.

GameRager: Well 1: I don't mind Steam so I have no problem using it with DNF.

2: Whether 2,089,567 or 2,089,568 people torrent a game I don't think it's gonna matter as a: Companies will use DRM regardless to discourage used sales, and b: If near everyone doesn't boycott in your proposed way then the boycott is in effect always going to be useless.

3; Cannot not buy DNF......I love Duke so much that i'd play it even with check at startup.
1: I blame you when I can't find any DRM free new games. ;-P

2: It's cumulative, while one or two people isn't going to make a difference, you wouldn't have a million downloads if a million people weren't doing it. It adds up and the more people that take the moral relativistic approach to it the more justification the companies see in locking it up.
Meh.

Not a fan of Steam.

I can understand why publishers like it, and those folks who do multiplayer.

I just really hate that there's no choice. If it were just for the multiplayer, I'd happily pay a reduced amount for a single-player only version that was drm-free... not ever likely to happen though.

Given that I've started up steam recently for the GOG roleplaying group organisation, I'm not as hard-line as I used to be.
Good thing I love steam so much.

And piracy just encourages the company to DRM it.

GameRager: Agreed, if someone is of such low intelligence that they can't rip the data files from Steam or of such high morals that they can't buy A Steam copy and then torrent a Steam-free one then it's their loss.

Plus some say they won't buy it with Steam because of lack of resale.....but c'mon....who would DARE want to sell THE DUKE?
Buying it on steam and playing a torrent game would be like playing that steam'ed game. I'd say at least buy it retail, that way Valve doesnt see a % of that sale.
I don't care . I'm happy with the previous DN games .

I don't like Steam but I see the value in it. It is the best alternative to any other DRM out there. What other DRM service gives me a server side backup and community stuff?

If someone thinks the service degrades the value of the game due to no reselling (isn't this the same lot who says reselling is worse than piracy?) that is fine but just buy the bloody thing on sale for $5 in a year.

Not 100% aimed at you GameRager but the general tone this thread and other Steam threads have.

GameRager: I'm buying through gamestop because they allow payment plans i.e. you can pay so much at a time up until release.
You may want to check out Amazon. They have a no pay until release with like nothing down. Think what the Witcher 2 preorder is here.
Another one i won't touch. Oh well, plenty of games out there worthy of my time and coin.

GameRager: Seriously? Because of steam? A service that will most likely be up for many years to come?
Because of Steamworks, yes. Won't prattle on as to 'why', because it gets real old, real fast for all involved.

My loss? Possibly. Although seeing as they're NOT getting my money, I'm never sure how that's supposed to work...

If I get desperate to play it (which, I hasten to add, has not happened for any game ever), I could, as you say, just pirate it.
