Hi there,

So far it seems to me, that most, if not all games, that get bundled with the (not stand alone) expansion, don't have a seperate install for the game alone.

E.g. Incubation cannot be installed without the wilderness missions.

Do you have the same impression?
I've only got one PC game where I actually wanted to remove a patch or expansion and that's Deus Ex The Invisible War because the person whom wrote the 1.2 patch coded it so that you couldn't map it to a game pad using the pads external profiler.

The few that i've got from here that were gold or expanded sets, I never thought to remove the expansions because usually they also serve as updates and patches.

1. Deus Ex is not on GOG

2. It never had an expansion.

3. You are talking about a freaking patch!

4. I didn't ask about removing anyway...

Sorry if this is rude, but you are derailing the thread in the very first post

Is my english so bad, or was the question that unclear?
He's right, without the expac you'd have an older version of the game, probably with less compatibility with modern OSes. No, you can't install without expacs, sorry.

I suspect that they get the final evolution of the game, meaning the latest "gold", "platinium" whastoever edition. That might be simpler for both GOG and the copyrightholder....
The reason I'm asking is, that in the GOG wiki, we wan't to make entries for each game, not only for each product (e.g. Commandos 2 and 3 have an entry each, additionally to the product entry).

If a game CAN be installed alone (without expasion) that would warrant a separate entry (e.g. BG 1 apart from BG 1 Saga)

I would probably never play a game without the expansion, if it is available. But as we don't want to dictate people what they are supposed to be playing, we wan't to inlcude the option into the wiki IF GOG makes that possible.

As a rule of the thumb I am for now not making entries for games without expansions, unless I hear otherwise.

Interestingly enough, sometimes such a release is a sort of mix-n-match of features between the original and the expansion. Granted, I can only come up with a single example right now, but when HoMM2+Expansion was released here, It came with both campaigns and map sets, but only the soundtrack (in-game) and level editor from the original. I believe it's been updated since, though.
A couple games don't have their expansions or mission packs. One that comes to mind is Ghost Recon. Probably due to pricing?
Sometimes u can uncheck the expansion's in gog installer.
As long as I don't start in a completely different campaign/game than the original I don't care.
It rarely makes the game significantly worse.
And do I want the GOG team to spend their time working on making both versions (vanilla and expanded) compatible and ready for release?
No, I really don't (as long as the first rule isn't broken).

On a related, but slightly off-topic, note.. I do want GOG to get all the expansions for games.
Even if they have to put it in their catalogue for another $5,99, I'm a collector so I want complete things.

Thanks for the good answer! Good to know somebody recognized what I wanted to know.

In your expirience, would you say that is the case in the majority of the cases or restricted to a couple of cases?

cheers!

Baldur's Gate, its successor, and Icewind Dale can all be installed without their respective expansions.

EDIT: no, they can't

Beyond that, I don't even know which games have expansions (and I'm too lazy to look it up).

No need to, you've already been a great help,.For the most part, I'm already bugging the people in the respective forums. ..
Didn't own the original Scared Gold but the GOG version allows you to start a new game in either campaign. You can also import your character from the fist in the the second. I don't remember an option to install just one or the other.

I remember being pleased that I could choose which campaign to play from the menu. Windows shows two Sacred Gold installations. Don't know if GOG did this or if it was like that in the original gold release.

The original DVD copy of Sacred Gold does indeed allow starting in either campaign, and character imports. (Without imports, you will not survive the expansion.)

The original DVD release only installs one copy, though.
