From what I understand Debit card purchases do not have purchase protection like credit card companies like Visa offer. Not sure if you can get your money back . I would definetelly try to get a different debit card number from your bank, and cancel this debit card however if you are sure this is a scam..or you might lose further money. Only use a debit card if you trust the company. Its like handing cash to them..

Some differences in the protection / liability between the two:

Given the potential to wipe out an account balance in its entirety, debit cards are best used only at completely trusted vendors. Of course, data being data there is no perfectly safe use of either one.
Alright, new plan is to see if the money gets back on my card tomorrow like I was told over the phone, if it is, great, spend it and cancel the card and get a new card through my bank, if the money isn't back, maybe try to fight it a little over the phone, if I can't get it back, oh well, I'm cancelling the card.
Slightly off topic, but I've had two (out of two) disputes solved through PayPal with minimum fuss for purchases through eBay that were clearly counterfeit items; laughably so :D

By the way, with dodgy companies PayPal tends to cut ties without hesitation. If it's not offered as a payment option, it could be a red flag that you need to heed.
Whoa, whoa! Looks like its sure tough to use debit card in US.

" I have to pay a $5 fee every time I want to put more money onto my card, and they charge me monthly fees."

Unbelievable, card i mainly use is basically prepaid one with reloading ability, but i have free service, free reloading, free SMS notifications and 1.5% of cashback. And such offer is nothing like unique here. Heck, my bank forced me to accept additional debit card with free year service, despite fact that i have one more debit card from same bank. "we giving them for all customers" they said when i tried to refuse.

Dont forget, its normally 45days to really cancel card. Within that timespan technically someone STILL can execute charges to card (well, normally they should be rejected, but its totally up to how card processing is implemented for this financial company).
