I tried FRAPS and don't trust it too much, registration, limited formats (only large bitmaps are available for free) and it is reported to hit the framerates pretty hard.
Greenshot is not reliable, I configured everything and could easily take screenshots of my desktop and normal applications but not every direct3d/opengl game (I think witcher2 didn't work).
I haven't tested Xfire, because it is also some kind of community client?

A really good tool:
1. take screenshots of desktop, games, videos etc. and only the active screen or can be configured
2. support formats like png without quality loss
3. configurable hotkey
4. save pictures to a defined location

I always use PicPick.

It has all the functions you want, it's easy to handle and it works pretty good with most games (even if there are games from time to time from which it can't take screenshots).

Well there's the print screen button built into Windows. You have to paste it into paint or something however.

There's also the Windows snipping tool but I don't think you can set a shortcut.

At the moment I use Greenshot, but with desktop composition disabled. This seems to be required by most tools anyway.
PicPick does pretty much the same job, with an additional editor etc. ^^

Try IrfanView: http://www.irfanview.net/
It is mainly a media viewer but it has a higly configurable screen capture tool, even with options for various formats.

You can set a keyboard shortcut to any application in the start menu (and WIndows 8's idea of it: the "all programs" screen, since it uses the exact same information). Though it only launches said application (complete with any command-line arguments set in the shortcut), and since the snipping tool isn't automatic you can't just press the keys and continue playing.

I used it heavily when I was still running WIndows.

Right-click the application shortcut and enter its properties, one of the fields is "keyboard shortcut" (or "shortcut keys", or something else to that effect), click there and push a key combination (I liked ctrl-alt-f12).

I always use xfire and I've no problems with that. it's perfect for that function. only use it for screenshots, not for (ingame)chatting.
plus I like to have an overview of what and how long I have played it. that's a funny thing to see after some years.

Fraps has a free version available that won't watermark your screenshots IIRC.

Maighstir: You can set a keyboard shortcut to any application in the start menu (and WIndows 8's idea of it: the "all programs" screen, since it uses the exact same information).
Additionally, if you have the program pinned to the taskbar, Win+# will launch the application pinned in slot #. So if the pinned applications are Browser, Explorer, Media Player, Skype, Win+1 will run the browser, Win+2 will open explorer, Win+3 will open the media player, Win+4 will open Skype.

It still has the same problems as the keyboard shortcut though.

I use Fraps full. Fairly sure Fraps (demo) does watermark, but ages since checked. Also think a restriction on amount of time you can record.

Having said that, I`m trying out RadeonPro` inbuilt & it seems better, so far :)

I'm not sure about your first point, but MSI Afterburner can do the others (not sure about "quality loss" pngs, but there are at least PNGs). I took some pictures with it in The Witcher yesterday, and they came out good, although I only used JPGs.

There are a tonne & a half worth of options to be played with, true hehe
But, it has improved frame rate in some games that were known to be bothersome, Bioshock Infinite was reason I first tried RadeonPro, never looked back since :)

You can set a profile for each game or globally, just potter about with it. You get used to it quickly enough.

P.S. There`s a very few games where you have to turn the API off (r`click that games profile) one of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games, but most work fine.
