So, as today is the first Saturday in May, today is Free Comic Book Day! By this point I should imagine most people interested have got their comics, so what are your thoughts on the ones you grabbed? The place I went to limited it to 5 per person, so I got the Kaboom Summer Blast, Teen Titans Go!, Rocket Raccoon, Future's End #0, and 2000AD.
As for my thoughts on them, starting with Kaboom:
Solid enough. Several small stories, most from their Cartoon Network licenses. Silly, fun. Nothing too notable, really, last year we had an Adventure Time CYOA story.
Teen Titans Go!:
Lots of fun, two stories, one with Cyborg trying to figure out who keeps eating his sandwiches, and with Beast Boy and Robin playing mini-golf. Definitely one to grab for silly fun.
Rocket Raccoon:
Gun-toting raccoon and pals try to rescue a princess. A simple story done well, also recommended.
Future's End #0:
Ooh, boy. Absolutely dreadful, but I'm not certain what I expected from DC after all this time. Frankenstein is evil now, and in this evil future where he's working for Brother Eye, he killed Black Canary and stuck her head into his chest so he could use her power. I am not fucking kidding, and it's not even a spoiler since it happens like, three, four pages into the comic. Every terrible thing about modern DC is in it, graphic violence for the sake of being "grim and gritty," dragging fan favourites into the mess (Terry McGinnis, no, call your agent or something), and another event comic coming right on the heels of the last one (Forever Evil still hasn't finished!). Please don't subject yourself to this shit.
2000AD sampler:
Some reprint stories, which are pretty good, some little ones that seem to just end with an ad for the collection or something. Good if you want some Judge Dredd, good if you want a little taste of some other 2000AD characters. Just don't expect anything truly deep, it's just a sampler.
Anybody else pick some up? What'd you get, and what'd you think?
