Im trying to move a folder that has a 6gig+ file in it to an external HDD.

"The file ###### is too large for the destination file system"

Its an ISO of a game I legally own (a backup)

Any advice?

If I install it and copy the game folder would that work?

Current method of Xfer is standard copy and paste.

Make sure the external HDD is not formatted in FAT32 as that doesn't support files larger than 4GB. If you can, format it NTFS or archive the ISO and split it in more files.

What filesystem are you using? Some filesystems like FAT32 don't support files that are over 4gb in size. If it's NTFS, then it's not the filesystem and is more likely the way you're doing the copying. I've found that Teracopy does a great job of copying large files, and will even verify that the files are copied correctly.

There's a few things you can do, one being convert or reformat the disk and the other being to split the file into pieces.

EDIT: Blasted Ninjas, I though I felt a breeze.

Assuming that the external HDD is larger than 6GB, it's likely formatted in FAT32 which allows for a maximum filesize of 4GB.
You could use an archiver like WinRAR or 7-Zip to split the ISO into two files, that way it'll fit.
Or you could try formatting the drive in NTFS, which allows larger filesizes.

Ah yes

It is FAT32 *face palm*

I cant format it though, It has over a TB of crap on it and My HDD wont hold it all while its being formatted.

I have7Zip (free) and a program called IZarc for archives but IDK what im doing with them TBH, I can unzip stuff and put something as a zip file but never managed to compress and IDK how to split it.

Edit: a 4.73GB went over fine?

Open 7Zip, navigate to where the ISO is, select it, click on add, then at Split to volumes, bytes write 3000 MB and hit OK

As for the edit, was it a 4.73 GB folder or file? ;) FAT32 has problems with single-files that are over 4GB, not a folder containing multiple files.

Create a new archive and select Split To Volumes (see screenshot) and select something like 4096MB or something.
Also, just put the compression to Store, so no it just splits it into volumes if you don't need to conserve space.

Right, seems to be doing it, gonna take an hour apparently, When I put it on the External and need it again, will the ISO just remember its one file and kind of just merge back together?

Oh and it was a folder good point, the biggest file in it was just over 3GB

No, you'll have to unzip it first unfortunately.

*Facepalm again*

I meant when the two zipped files are unzipped will they become one.

Edit: that end of the sentence reminds me of a song

Oh, yeah, you unzip the first one and then it automatically extracts from the second (they need to be in the same folder though).

Only if you want it to keep extracting automatically, if it can't find the second part you get the option to locate it (browse to it). ;)

- Using 7zip you don't need to create new archive to split file. Just open 7zip browser, locate file and choose menu File/Spilt File.
-If you want to create new archive and split it – in main window remember to set no-compression in Compression Ratio options - you will get splitted archive with speed of copying file (compressing 6 GB iso that contains data that are already compressed takes lots of time and gives poor effects).
-As an alternative for 7zip you could just use Total Commander - this program also have ability to split/combine files.

All those methods has one big drawback: if you want to mount splitted file – you need to combine iso file first. That is why I think best solution to your problem is:

- Alcohol 52% has ability to split image into files while imaging and - you DON'T need to combine those splitted parts while mounting - they will be visible to you as one file in virtual drive.
