Arkose: There are no traditional expansions (Armada had a free add-on). There are multiple versions of some of the games (e.g. Privateer 2: The Darkening had both DOS and Windows versions) so it will be interesting to see exactly what version(s) GOG ends up with.

grunthos64: Hopefully the Dos version. Many of the early Windows games can barely work on my computer while DOSbox is a lot smoother and works like it was intended to.
That will probably be it, but GOG has gotten a bit of flack for releasing Simcity 2000 and Dungeon Keeper's DOS versions. Of course I hope they go with the most compatible versions, but I hope they don't come across as "lazy" either. (One person described GOG just "slapping" DK into DOSBox, and that just seeming lazy. :P)

I actually had impression (and from reading) the DOS versions were generally superior..and easier to work with (from GOGs point i guess) :)
Someone didn't get the memo that GOG likes to play mystery spookhouse about it's upcoming releases.

"We are pleased to announce that we have confirmed with Electronic Arts that they have licensed four more Wing Commander games to GOG! Academy, Armada, The Darkening and Prophecy should be available through the service later this year, completing the PC run of the series. Proof positive that it will be an amazing year for Wing Commander!"
Awesome news. Thanks for passing it on.

hell yes!

That is just great piece of news for Monday morning at the office :-P So it seems the second half of the year will be better for me than the first one :-)

EDIT: Concerning your worries I don't think there will be any technica problems with WCP (the only non DOSBox game in the package). I've finished it on XP with this opengl fix you can download from wcnews). There is also alternative approach - according nGlide WCP is playable with it so we should be fine.

This is why I'm skeptical of the claim that GOG NEEDS a new publisher to sign up right away, of course it would be good but it's not like there's still a great deal of classic games on EA (and some on Ubisoft's and Atari's backlog) that could come to GOG first.

I'm a bit of a completionist so I'd rather the entire EA classic backlog gets released here before GOG move on to new pastures. And to think I signed up here in the hope of Red Alert 2 coming to GOG, and it still isn't here :/

GOG does need to make a deal with Bethesda, what with the whole id catalog of games and their early Elder Scrolls stuff done in nice Dosbox built in packages. Also they will need to talk to Bethesda by the end of the year anyway since Interplay will lose the right to sell the classic Fallout games anymore and it be said to see an early staple of the site leaving.

I still have the boxed versions of The Darkening and The Prophecy. A digital download will be welcome.

I'm curious to see how they will price Armada and Academy though, Graphically they are as outdated as WCIII. Academy is a "mission builder". It's the only game in the WC franchise I didn't like Perhaps because I only got it quite late, as a budget version. Armada is far more enjoyable, but will its multiplayer mode be playable ?

DOSBox supports IPX and modem emulation so Armada's multiplayer shouldn't be a problem.
Holy Crap! Great news. I was just wondering the other day when these would come along.
Prophecy shouldn't be a problem. All I needed was nglide and a small graphics fix to play the game on a Win7 machine without any problems whatsoever.

Hm, I'm wondering if GOG got the Gold version which includes the Secret Ops episodes, but it wouldn't be too tragic if they didn't. a) Special Ops is ok, but it's pretty much just a collection of dogfights connected by a very basic storyline, and b) you can ge t the whole thing for free on Wing Commander CIC. Their package even got updated graphics.

Academy and Armada, hm. Maybe it would be best if those were bundled together. >_>

The Darkening, though? I sure hope they take their time with this. As I remember, that game was very buggy and crash-prone. Nice to see it here, though, even if it's mostly for the movie sequences. I gotta have more Walken around here, baby! XD

Hoping Prophecy to mean Prophecy Gold.

Prophecy Gold and The Darkening I'd certainly get from GOG. Not sure about the others.
And how about this remake?

I didn't even know these existed. Would like to know GOG's reply too.
The only difference was superior music for wc1/wc2 but if you use munt it's not THAT superior :-P

EDIT: Sorry - plus the intro for KS (really nice one)
