I think they took notes from the failed Red Dwarf series remake and decided to leave science fiction alone.

I think at this point in the discussion, it's fitting to hear what Eddie Izzard has to say on the subject of how Hollywood adapts foreign films to an American audience.

There's no significant problem with literacy here in America, but there is a big problem with being spoiled & just plain "wanting what we want." People are afraid that if they're reading the subtitles, they'll miss something "good" happening on the screen. Hence, the remakes. Plus, if Hollywood can make money off it by making their own version of a foreign film, believe me, they'll do it. Capitolism at its finest.

Me myself, I sometimes use subtitles on the dvd movies I watch. I have trouble hearing hard-consonent sounds, so if they movie I'm watching has characters speaking English but doing so with a foreign accent, I need the subtitles to keep up with things. Same thing if the characters speak quickly, I just can't catch it all so I use subtitles. Sometimes I wish real life people came with subtitles because I have to ask people to speak slower or just repeat themselves.

So confused reading thread and the date, caught this film on Watch Instant a year ago, a remake makes sense oh lol

Surely it is for a monopoly of literate people, originally a book or not. They remake all your base in a town of American Tinsel for its alchemy is vast, and its returns are even vaster making it the vastest in the known galaxy.
Already a most powerful sorcerer has come to the table to invoke angelic and demonic principalities all around....

I have not read the books but the Swedish films were terrible, thus I find the anti-remake elitism hilarious. Fincher isn't enough to sell me on this unless the script is re-written with less boring characters and less contrived plot, but I gather that would be something fundamental to the book.

Then what you hear about the movie is wrong. Really, it's quite good as a movie.

This isn't some arty European film that is far too intelligent for the American mouthbreathers. It's a dumb-as-doorknobs action thriller dressed up superficially as a female empowerment aesop. Are we forgetting the first film was adapted from a book? You essentially could make the same argument that audiences are illiterate, they can't understand subtlety, they want instant thrills etc for having watched the movie at all.

What I don't get about the new film is the swedish location with non-swedish actors. I thought they would change the setting so that it happens in America, but here we will have these actors speaking english in Sweden? That is something rather new, will it start a new trend for Hollywood remakes? A way to keep some of the exoticism of a foreign setting?

Interesting, i wonder if Fincher's still got it [the Se7en feel].

No sir I'm diabetic, are you a doctor? Whatever ones condition, it won't be a photo finish to decide if the Se7en version with the NIN soundtrack is worth the ha$$le. He's like Irving Berlin with a synthesizer now, same with that Billy Corgan lol

The American version of Let The Right One In was so much better than the foreign version. And the foreign one was pretty good.

Foreign language films have allways had a limited audience in the US. There is much more money to be made by a English language version of the film.

I refused to watch the American version, it irritated me that Americans can't read subtitles even for such a fantastic movie.

That's unfortunate, because I saw both, and the American version is better in almost every way.
