I more bothered by the trailer's stock music :P

CG, 3D pandering, bah those are small potatoes compared to this trailers horribly generic music, where is the Original music from the first trailer, or at least a sountrack from the Lord of the Rings films, but no we get generic epic orchestra music for trailer to hype this shit up #7

I hate 3d movies for this. So many shots got so similar in so many different movies only because "whoooo, 3d!", it got boring long time ago...

Also was Legolas in the book? I would have remembered his name there after reading all of it.
Characters like Legolas were created for Lord of the Rings and are being added to The Hobbit as with their families being in it the director or studio decided they may as well also have those characters in it

Desolation of Smaug is pretty much the only film I want to see in a theatre this year. But I don't want to see a 3D version.
I know that Peter Jackson has taken liberties with part of the book and embellished some things but I am curious/interested in the overall conent. I liked 'An Unexpected Journey', maybe not as much as when I first saw 'Fellowship of the Ring' but it was very enjoyable, and I felt that I was again in Tolkien's Middle Earth. I don't mind the extra added bits about the Witch King of Angmar (leader of the Nazgu) as long as I feel like I am witnessing the history of Middle Earth again. When I watch the Lord of the Rings movie, I get drawn in to that world. I forget about everything outside of that viewing experience. I want to be there the way the Original Unaltered Star Wars Trilogy made me want to be in that world. Not many movies leave that kind of impression on me.

What will really sell Smaug as a character and not just a CGI creation is how he carriies on with Bilbo. How he reacts and emotes, and speaks, the way Gollum doesit oh so well. Gollum; I still have not seen nearly as amazing an charcter work in other films. It's like Gollum is the real person and Andy Serkis was just the puppet.

They could have just done make up for Gollum, this scene from Return of the King showcased that Gollum did not have to be CG (Warning disturbing video)

This sums it up for me, as well. Perhaps it's an unfair yardstick but the Hobbit lacked something compared to the LOTR trilogy. I think it was charisma. Bilbo is portrayed well enough, but I simply couldn't generate any empathy for the dwarves.

I hasten to add I don't think it was a bad movie...just lacking something that I may have been unfairly expecting.

Book was sort of the same aswell regarding the Dwarves, only difference is that Thorin was not as distrusting of Bilbo in the beginning than in the film.

Agreed. The mob of dwarves is not well fleshed out in the book, either, with the exception of Thorin. I just thought that the movie would at the very least make Thorin (and maybe Bombur for comic effect) more pronounced as individuals.

Yeah, I was wondering about that too. It made LOTR feel more genuine.
