That's just false.
Most of the villains in NWN have no motivation at all, they're just evil for the sake of it. The only ones whose motivations are explained are Maugrim, Aribeth (and for both of them it's mostly "they were mind-controlled by the lizard queen"), and the lizards.
And even then, it's pretty basic.

The story in NWN is, with a few exceptions, either nonexistent (like the explanation for why you have to do everything and everyone else spends their time standing around looking pretty) or cliched and awful.
There is absolutely no complexity in NWN's plot. It's always: "There's this evil threat, we need McGuffin 1, 2 and 3 to save us. Go fetch them." What's complex about that?

Hell, Bioware admitted that the NWN OC was an afterthought they put together in a few months, NWN was originally not even supposed to have one since it was mostly a mod tool to make your own adventures and play them with your friends.

OTOH, MotB has complex characters, an interesting mystery to solve (which is always more interesting than those "save the world" plots), no real evil opponent other than Myrkul since everyone else has very good reasons for even the bad things they do.

And the fact they explain their actions in dialogue is perfectly understandable, since your PC's main goal is to understand why he's in this situation.

The moral quandary about the Wall was very interesting too, it's only too bad they don't let us destroy it.

Frankly, you're the only gamer I've ever known to actually praise NWN's story, and simultaneously dissing MotB's story makes me wonder about your taste.

mufansne: You might try Neverwinter Nights if you are into RPG's quite liked the story. Don't know if it is the best one but you can try it.

Novotnus: Or rather Mask of the Betrayer.
NWN 1's storyline is kind of... generic.
True, NWN's storyline isn't that complex - but there are some community modules with pretty complex plots. I recommend e.g. the Prophet series:

Prologue: It cannot be denied
Chapter 1: By the Will of Kings and Mortals
Chapter 2: The Century of Sorrow
Chapter 3: That Which is Destined

I actually do not really love any of the stories, but in comparisson What to say about nwn1 would seem praise i suppose, I do think the enviroment and charechters of motb is more interesting as i pointed out earlier, but those do not really affect a story to well.
To draw similarities: Rambo, a beloved movie by many(if its good or not is not the question, ive actually never even finnished the movie) but I think we all can agree the story of Rambo is not what makes it "great" to the people who love it....

While if you take Babylon 5 for instance, a hated series by most, some people still love it, the conversations are rather bad, the action of the serie is negligeble, the only reason a person could love it would propebly be if they really like the story elements.

(took 2 examples i dont like to stay as objective as possible)

Who in bioware said this? Was it a spokesman? was it a programmer? was it a writer? If someone really said such a thing finding a interview surely shouldn't be a problem, and to some im sure it would make a interesting read indeed :) (and any true newssite will surely have sourced it)

GoJays2025: I'll put in a vote for Cryostasis. Quite the underrated game.
Yes :D I love Cryostasis.

P1na: If you put GTA as a complex storyline, I'm at a loss on what to recommend here.
Perhaps Zelda...

wpegg: 'Complex' could mean so many things.

There are games with a lot of branches, such that you can play through in different ways. Like 'The Witcher'

There are games with a long storyline, that has a lot of content to it. Like the Final Fantasy games (most things by Square tend to take about 3 solid days of play to complete).

There are games with a storyline that makes you think a lot. Such as Gemini Rue.

There are games with a storyline that has a lot of back story, and you can hunt around for more information on the world. Such as Divinity 2 (also called The Dragon Knight Saga).

There are games with an epic storyline that ends up in you leading a world changing struggle.

Which are you looking for?
That's basically what I was thinking (I mean : my thinking was more basic than wpegg's one ... so quoted for truth).
Because I just finished Bioshock2, I was going to submit Bioshock 1 & 2 due to the complex and rich background. However they remain pretty straightforward games.

Gta 4 is running circles in the story department around most games available on GOG.
Xenogears, on PSOne classics. Deep as a damn pit.
Chrono Trigger. And Chrono Cross, despite its flaws.
Dark souls (hope to say shortly demon souls too, i never played it :/)
best cryptic narrative and minimal plot with a deep lore

Baldur's gate 2

Spec ops the line
(not very complex but really mature storyline)

Silent hill 2

Shadow of the colossus or ICO too
