Fortysixter: I was sitting up late one Saturday night, all alone in my house ...
Ha ha, that's an hilarious story! Thanks for sharing it. :D
A game like that would have to be a lesser known title called "I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream". It was an adventure game based on Harlon Ellison's short story with the same name

This game was immersive in the showing of characters that were present. Each with his or her own fatal flaw that made up the story of each level.

This game didn't scare you with simple ghouls jumping out of nowhere to say "Boo". This game was.....to put it bluntly.....a mental mind @#$#. All in all, the game is worth playing.

Penumbra: Black Plague is so much better than the first one. They ditch the combat entirely, and that gave way to Amnesia.
Despite the system's graphical limitations, one of the creepiest games I've played was on the Wii.

Yes, the Wii.

It didn't sell well, partially because of a lack of marketing and partially because of the genre, but I found "Cursed Mountain" to have all sorts of creepy in the presentation. Roaming the Himalayas, fighting off ghosts in some kind of creepy spirit realm, and the entire mythology surrounding it... it really was a great title, and if the Wii had supported more games like it I probably would have kept it.

Really, there are tons of creepy games out there, though. Another console title that fits would be Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. Imagine you're playing in a dark room late at night. You're tired, but you need to reach the next save point so you keep playing. Suddenly, a cockroach lands on your TV. Then another. And another. Gross, but you reach out to knock them off... and they're ON THE INSIDE. More and more appear, crowding out your view. Or you're playing along, and the screen starts to bleed. Or your character's body parts starts randomly falling off while they scream in agony. Or you're in the middle of a fight, and the game RESETS ITSELF AND DELETES YOUR SAVE FILE, or at least tells you it has. The game had SO MANY great sanity effects, and the mythos... wow.

Leroux: Recently I was really impressed with the atmosphere in Arx Fatalis
I'm currently playing it. Claustrophobic atmosphere.

Gothic games can be really creepy indeed. I also remember Hexen 1 and the totally insane Death trap dungeon.
Silent Hill two gave me the creeps after a few strait hours of playing. Between the sound of the radio squawking and the Dome headed monster that kept popping up, I was jumpy for a wile after I quit playing.

orcishgamer: With this list, you owe it to yourself to play Penumbra (it came with Humble Indie Bundle and HIB2 as well, if you know anyone with some extra codes).
I actually i own the game both on steam and on frictional game store. Amnesia blew me away so I ended up buying everything they had for sale in both stores to give them my support. As for playing the game i hope to get around to it soon :)
