Manhunt 1 - You're a death row inmate who gets starred in a snuff film for some rich asshole's sexual pleasure.

Manhunt 2 - Honestly don't remember, I think it had a bad case of Fight Club :P

Condemned - Gruesome melee combat against some generally freaky dudes.

Carmageddon series - Running people over for sport!

Postal 1 - The opposite of 2, you get your home taken away and snap. Mow everyone down, move to the next screen. Repeat. No South Park humor in this one.

Quarantine series - Kinda like Carmageddon, you're a taxi driver in a city falling apart. Dark comedy all over.

I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream - Fucked up, surreal adventure game.

Darkseed - Another adventure game with artwork by H.R. Giger.

Sanitarium - Another really good messed up adventure title.

Harvester - Dark comedic FMV title that wants you to die.

Blood - FPS that has you going up against a dark god that wants to corrupt the world with his evil. Blood 2 takes place in the future and isn't as dark as the first, tho has a grim city feel to it and some of the enemies are fucked up.

I Could go on, The Suffering, Painkiller, Gabrial Knight, Phantasmagoria, Ripper, Black Dahlia, Dark Souls, Legacy of Kain, Hitman, GTA, Deus Ex, Half-Life 2, Kane & Lynch, Strife, Syndicate, Dungeon Keeper, Diablo... it all depends on what you find dark :P

both games are more Darker than Dragon Age:Origins which marketed itself as a Dark Fantasy at one time.

Don't quite get your comment re: not liking horror games, but you want Lovecraftian games and will check out Eternal Darkness? Amnesia is very different from Doom 3, and it really is quite dark. The Suffering is a good action/horror game; I guess it's dark by virtue of being a horror game, but not as dark as Amnesia or Silent Hill, for example.

Some console games are pretty awesome! Among other things, you're not checking out Eternal Darkness on the PC...

Ignore the silly dog ending - The man was reliving repressed memories of himself performing a mercy killing on his wife who was dying from cancer, which is why so many of the mobs and themes were centred around sickness and hospitals.

Dark fantasy is just a way of saying, "Hey, there's language, sex, brooding, and probably racism in our high fantasy!". The Souls games are good examples of dark fantasy that aren't just edgy high fantasy (ironically made by an Eastern developer despite being Western fantasy).

I would not consider them dark. They touch on some dark themes, but they don't present them in a way that makes them feel nearly as dark as they could.


Postal 1 feels darker, as it takes itself a bit more seriously.


Not this one. Well, possibly at first, but this one is really dark.





Other games to consider:
Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper
This game deals with the murders that Jack the Ripper committed. It contains several disturbing scenes and is pretty dark in general.

Lucius
Sadly not released yet, but worth keeping in mind the next time you are in the mood for something like this. You play as the son of the devil, and need to create "accidents" for people who live in a mansion.

I haven't finished it yet, but did someone mention Still Life? Fairly dark so far, with some surprisingly grisly parts.

three of those things are not really dark, but more on the realism side, hell racism against non-dark elves was prevelant in Morrowind even to dark elves who are not born in Morrowind but it's not Dark its realism.

I can see that. I prefer Postal 2, but IMHO Postal 2 isn't anywhere near as dark as Postal was. It's bright colors everywhere and I just have a hard time viewing it as particularly dark.

I'm not sure about Postal 3, that just came out last year, IIRC, and I haven't actually had the chance to see what they did with it.

I can however see why one wouldn't consider Postal to be dark, but considering the subject matter, I can't completely understand why it wouldn't be considered dark. If you catch my drift.

Simcity or Metropolis is extremely dark, if you spend all your time crashing the helicopter. Ah, good times.

And that reminds me of what's arguably the darkest game series ever. The Sims, show me somebody that didn't spend all their time torturing the characters and I'll show you somebody that didn't play the game. J/K.

Most people have hit what I was going to recommend, but two more games I can think of are Yume Nikki and Ib.

Ib! Freeware horror game. Becomes less dark when the first NPC appears (he's sort of comic), but I agree, everyone should play Ib.

Dark Souls recently came out on PC (August of this year) with content that still has yet to be ported over to the consoles. You don't need to play Demon's Souls since there's no real connection due to Sony owning the IP rights.

As far as a story, there IS a story, but it's buried, and sometimes it takes a playthrough or two to see connections that people make. I'm seeing stuff in Demon's Souls (I haven't played through either completely yet, working on Demon's Souls first because Dark Souls is supposed to be more polished) that's making me rethink what I'm seeing in front of me as far as some characters and their motives.

But yeah, I'd say it's worth checking out, it's a tough, but not impossible game.

You should read the short story. It is much darker. I love it.
