As some of you may of heard, Gamespy is shutting down many servers in the last couple weeks of many games.
Some of which are on GoG.

I know Neverwinter Nights has a strong community here and has already been hit.
I am sure many other games too.

This is a sad time, many have already taken to the Facebook page in protest (not that will do anything sadly), but a scroll down can show a vast number of titles.

What do you guys think of all this?

I don't really play any above listed multi-player games, but it is indeed a bad turn of events for those that do. A protest might help, but unless people are willing to play Gamespy's bills I don't think anything will change. I been wrong before, let's hope I wrong this time.
great I finally got Battlefront 1 running on my PC again(had some issues getting it to run on Vista/7) and lo and behold the servers are shut down..
With DRM services starting to handle multplayer aspects (Steamworks and GFWL) , Gamespy was made obsolete. So it's not real a surpise to see them go. It had to happen sooner or later.

Personally I never used it since my internet connection sucked way too much back when Gamespy was big. The only title I have that requires it is Borderlands and to be honest it was a weird decision to have a third party service in a steamworks game, a thing that they immediately fixed in the second game.

Multiplayer is inherently limited, sadly.
Titan Quest uses Gamespy, doesn't it? Nice timing....

Maybe you'd like to give GameRanger a try then. It's got support for quite a few games, and it's also one of the easiest ways to get a multiplayer session working for some of these older games. (Mind you the more recent addition of video ads can be a bit annoying, but it's still free then.)
I still play Neverwinter Nights several times a week, so I've been following this. Fortunately, NWN servers weren't actually dependent on Gamespy, so they're still operating. It's still going to hurt the community in regard to ease of new players finding a place to play, which sucks.
so how will the gamespy multiplayer games validate the cd keys then ?
I hope this finally forces Gearbox to ditch GameSpy in Borderlands.

But I doubt it.

They might not. At least one developer has claimed that this kills multiplayer for that particular game (I forget offhand which game that was). Other games only used Gamespy for the actual matchmaking (ie NWN), so they're not hit as hard.
So first GLU mobile buys gamespy, then they refuse to provide any support for it (and the problems that arose due to the transfer), and now they are shutting it down.

There are alternatives though. Many of the games that use gamespy also support LAN play. And there are ways to set up virtual LANs, like through or [url=https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/]Hamachi
Rotten. This is why matchmaking is glorified DRM. I can stil play Dianlo I online.
Gamespy was always garbage and SHOULD die.

But not at the hands of some crappy-greedy-mobile-game-company holding 5-10 year old game's servers hostage for some fast, sleezy attempts at extorting cash. I expect/hope some company with enough money has some legal power to fight them over this for an older game, but who knows.

Fans will try to fix what games can be fixed after this, but this just proves again how third party online drm means your game has an undisclosed short lifespan of accessibility at the whim of some corporate douche.
This really makes me feel sad and deep.
