Sorry if this isn't the right forum in which to ask this question, but it's not a game specific issue at all. Nevertheless, I'm confident that enough folks in this fine community will be experienced enough to know the answer!

In DOSBox, I'm familiar enough with calling up the keymapper, and what it does. There are LOTS of games where I'd love to be able to remap the keys (it's not a GOG game, but my original copy of System Shock BEGS for key remapping!). However, there are plenty of times when the keymapper interferes with normal operation - Using the command line, typing in savegame names, or switching from one game to another, just for example.

Is there some way to turn the keymapper on and off at will? So that, say, I can assign the arrow keys to WSAD when the keymapper is on, use that for playing the game, and then turn the keymapper off to restore the WSAD keys to their original function on the fly? And then after that, quickly be able to turn the keymapper back on again?

Any assistance or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Toggling the mapper isn't possible as far as I know. Deleting the mapper file will undo the changes for the next session but DOSBox will still remember the key changes during the current session.

Note that you can have a separate keymapper for each game by launching games from shortcuts or whatever. This means you won't need to use the command line at all. I use D-Fend Reloaded for this purpose but you can also do this yourself with a bit of fiddling (check out how GOG sets up their shortcuts).

Like Arkose wrote, use D-Fend Reloaded. It's really the best way to create for each game a profile and use different configurations. Easy to use and very comfortable.

While I appreciate the suggestion, D-Fend Reloaded is really not an option for me, as I'm running OS X. Also, it doesn't help much for in game requirement. If I map the 'S' key to be the 'Up Arrow', then that means I'll never be able to use the letter 'S' in any of my save game names, or type the letter 'S'. Thanks for the suggestion, though! Perhaps I'll see if there are any decent OS X frontends.

Ah, now I understand what you meant with savegame names. Then D-Fend Reloaded or his mac pendant Boxer make no sense, sorry for that. From the The wiki page says you can turn tue mapper on by ctrl+f1. Maybe you can turn it off the same way?
