Good point about digital versus physical sales. I think digital sales have overtaken physical copies for the PC. I don't think that large numbers of pirated copies equals large potential profits, but I was taking developers viewpoints, whereby even a slim amount of thwarted pirates might yield massive profits, or for a small studio a slim profit could be all the difference in the world. In the end, though, I've no way to be sure.

The Ubisoft DLC is, so far, the worst example of piracy-prevention gone awry. In a way, I can understand their reasoning. They acknowledge that no DRM is hacker proof, so instead they create a method that in theory takes weeks, instead of days, to crack. Their hope, then, is to use it simply as a delaying mechanism, whereby pirates would get frustrated waiting for the game to get cracked and go out an buy it themselves, since most sales for a game come in the first month.

There are two flaws I see with Ubisoft's DRM. The first, as we've talked about, is that there isn't much overlap between pirates and potential customers. The second concerns the nature of the DRM. The delay strategy of the DRM may be a temporary obstacle to pirates, but it would be a permanent obstacle to customers that'll be in place well after a game has been cracked. Any time a pirated copy of a game is easier to run than a legitimate copy, a serious mistake has been made.
Honestly I couldn't give a fuck, I care about GoG about as much as they do me.

I personally don't pirate games anymore because it completely devalues them and takes away that *special* feeling you get from new toys.
Well Adokat, we seem to be in agreement on this issue. That's probably a first for me. I'm usually violently attacked for being a 'pirate simpatico'. But really, I'm just a guy who doesn't like seeing PC gaming crumble because the publishers and developers are so worried about losing money that they start doing stupid stuff that doesn't help anyone, like Ubisoft.

If the end goal of piracy protection is to increase sails, then it seems like they're going about it the wrong way. Current schemes are either ineffective at best, and harmful to the consumer at worst. Either way, I don't see it accomplishing too much or being worth the resources. However, there is a proven method of increasing sails-striving to improve the consumer experience.

GoG does a pretty good job at this, providing bonuses for downloading, ease of installation and compatibility, and a helpful community. I've had experiences with other digital distribution places where it was extremely difficult, if not outright impossible, to play their games, with DRM being a central reason.

Bubble_Man: Like others in this thread, like to buy games and support the companies that make them. Part of the reason I bought Fallout 1&2 from this site was to support Interplay. Since they're essentially back from the dead and very small, they need every sale they can get.
Indeed

Interplay provided some of the absolute best software for PC in the 90's

I too want to support them in any way I can, maybe we will see more great stuff from them
@GoJays2025: While Steam serves as DRM it is also a digital store, an auto-update and game files repair tool and an integrated community for online games. So most people don't have problem with it.

Starforce is basically a very specific virus - it uses the exact same mechanism as viruses. Problem is, it's very dangerous to install Starforce on modern PC with Win 7 - you may actually ruin your PC. It's not so bad with Win XP or older versions of Windows, but it still slows down system and may occasionally cause BSOD, but only on certain hardware. I believe it's tested with most common DVD-drives etc.

I suggest you change it to "I love you all!" and see what happens. At the very least - it will sow confusion :P.

As amusing as it would be (especially with a care bear avatar or something), he really would be a troll then.

-544. -64 rep in 8 hours. That's just completely out of control now.

Getting sucked into all this bullshit isn't helping. Especially not when you resort to name calling and starting some kind of crappy internet vendetta. How the hell is that going to help anything? If he's a troll then you're just giving him exactly what he wants.

I'd just drop it if I were you.

Give a low rated post a + and see what happens to their rep.

Whoa, what?! That's bloody crazy! I take it the GameRager fan club are already well aware of this exploit?
Ahaha, I couldn't resist GameRager. I haven't seen you do anything horrible enough for me to give you negative rep with true feeling, but I will give you some pluses because I'm proud of your current rep.

who cares ?
Its not a big deal, piracy will be always piracy and is not just around GOG stuff, you can
see everyday a lots of movies even filtered and released really faster at same
time like on cinemas (CAM, Telesync, R1,R3,R5, DVDSCR, DVDRIP, BRRIP etc..),
also in games, steam games cracked, new games, console games, all kind of stuff. And
not is only on trackers, just take a look on google and search about "gog" and you will
found links to forums with gog stuff hosted in fileservices like rapidshare, megaupload,
hotfile, etc.. but I think gog have nothing to worrie because loyal customers come here
and we paid for our games, tech support and to be part of this nice comunity.

A question to the thread starter uulav, you said
"I have found gog games from few private trackers, this makes me sad panda :( ? What are you guys thinking about this?"
Please c'mon if you are part of private trackers you should know how they work, to get into
usually you may get a invite OR SHOW PICS/SCREENSHOT OF YOUR RATIO FROM
ANOTHER TRACKERS, then they see how usefull are you and they let you in. If you
are in, then you are part of it. Please dont lie us! i hate hypocrites, you are there for
leech then dont come here acting like and angel saying this kind of nonsense.
