I'd start her off on something like Painkiller only to watch her jaw drop when she sees the first boss. But I'm groovy like that.
On a serious note, neither DA:O nor NWN 2 are new-user friendly. Start her on something a little lighter. NWN 2 is too intricate, and chances are the gore fest in DA:O will scare her away from gaming and make her think we're all a bunch of sociopaths. I'd go with Mass Effect and set it for her so that the party members use their abilities automatically, as well as setting the difficulty to easy.
I mean, if you really want to get her into the fantasy thing, I guess DA:O would be ok, if you turn off the bloody gore. Ultimately you know her best, pick something that you know she'll like to take part in. That's the best advice I can give you.

Al1: Out of those two, I would be inclined to say Dragon Age. It's more self explanatory both mechanically and story wise. My other advice would be, whatever you choose, if possible play it with her. As a first time gamer, she may be more inclined to come back to it if you can make it an enjoyable experience that you share.
NWN 2, as has been mentioned, is heavy. Whilst I would say it is the better RPG, it's not the best starting point. It's like I say about comic books. You would not start out someone who had never read a comic with the works of Alan Moore. You'd give them something lighter to get into the medium with, like The Dark Knight Returns.
swordsandroses: What he said. It's just an easier game to digest, to the disappointment of RPG fans, but perfect for a first timer. My friend's wife plays it on PS3 so it must be good. On the lol side, I wonder if she'll pick Zevran or Alistair...or Leliana :P

Yes, if you can introduce her to a game other than Dragon Age and Neverwinter Nights 2, then you should introduce her to one of the Sims games. Girls really love those games. But there is a chance she will start spending more time in front of the computer and less time with you...so if you are the needy type, you should just introduce her to Dragon Age.

Is this a person who's never played a video game before, or what? If so, I would stay far away from both of those games, unless she has a background in tabletop gaming or something like that.

I couldn't really get into dragon age.
I left for work one morning, only to come back and find my girlfriend deeply engrossed in saving the circle of magi.
Over the next three days, she had completed the game, when I hardly finished the first town.
What can I say, bitches love Alistair

jimmystuart: I need advice about two games that are not on GOG but advice from GOG is the only advice I would trust. My long suffering girlfriend has agreed to try out a game and not wanting to put her off forever I need to choose one she would enjoy. I have decided between Neverwinter nights 2 and Dragon age. Neverwinter is a great game but maybe alittle dated. I never liked Dragon Age but it is a newer easyer game. Which would you pick?
Why limit yourself to those two choices? If she is new to gaming I'd say show her neither of those and play Lego Harry Potter instead (or one of those other Lego titles depending what types of movies she likes). And PLAY WITH HER. However if you must decide on one of the above I would ask yourself is she a more complex girl, she might like NWN2 UI or character options or does she like character interaction DA. If I were presenting one to my GF it would probably be DA, she couldn't get enough of developing character story lines on TV.

I enjoyed NWN's solo campaign, especially the first module in the city of Neverwinter. I do not understand why everybody disliked it.

Legrasse: Not at all, NWN2 was a lot better than the first game, IMO. I found the Neverwinter Nights campaign to be horrible, it was only saved by Hordes of the Underdark.
I'd still pick Dragon Age Origins though.

Took everyones advice and went for Dragon Age. She liked the story but struggled with the controls (not a gamer).
Popinjay - that would be evil
iuliand - Worms is the only game she enjoys playing. I will try something else and im sure she will find something we can both enjoy.
As a side note I think my disgust at Dragon Age is due to it being nowhere near as good as NWN 2. So many wasted opportunitys. Well back to Baldur's gate for me, anyone know a code to make Xan happy?

Why do you think they love Alistair? He's not very bad boy and it seems girls love the bad boys. :)
