I just noticed that we can order the game catalog by amount sold.

Some interesting data comes up, like the fact that Fallout outsold Teen Agent (a free game) and that currently Baldur's Gate is the 51th best sold game and Planescape Torment is number 70, a couple of situations that are bound to be changed very very soon.

Also, of note, are the genres of the top games. Many are genres once very popular among PC gamers and now, are mostly considered niche games.

So, what are your thoughts?

I would have thought Still Life III and King's Quest VII & VIII would have been higher.
That's cool, never noticed. Kinda sucks seeing certain games toward the top or bottom.

It works off of total downloads, those games are recent additions. HOMM3 beating out HOMM2 is a travesty, however, does no one appreciate music?
I didn't notice this either. Very interesting. Obviously, it's hard to gauge with just that information the REALITY of how popular one game or another is, due to many games being out longer than others.

However, I think overall the top 10, 20, 30 and 40 games are very heartening and show we have good taste :) At least that's what I'd like to believe. I mean, Fallout, Duke Nukem, Arcanum, Master of Orion, Divine Divinity, Might and Magic, Descent and Freepsace 2 all near the top?

We really ARE a classy community!
Tex Murphy 1 & 2 is a strange addition. Maybe it's because of that Christmas sale?

The one where it was free? hah
There is quite a lot of things that can be concluded from this list. But the most important thing is this:

Almost everyone will have added the free games to their account, so it is easily understandable why they are at the top. Because they remain free for all times new users will keep adding them to their account.

The fact that Tex Murphy 1&2 is still so high on the list and so close to the free games probably means that almost as many people got it for free, which was only possible Christmas last year. What can we conclude from this? That GOG has not gotten many new members in almost a year. This would explain why GOG felt the marketing stunt was necessary. They were desperate for new users.

Admittedly this is all speculation since we do not have absolute numbers. There could be a huge drop in sales numbers between the free games and Tex Murphy 1&2, and indeed Fallout 1&2 did sell more than Tex Murphy 1&2 which is only possible with more users or some people not taking advantage of the giveaway.

IMO - a good indicator of a new surge of users is when Fallout hits the Bestseller list on the main page...
Wow some supprises there especially in the worst 10
A pity that Serious Sam: The Second Encounter is so far down on the list. It's still probably the best of that particular brand of games, and definitely the best of the Serious Sam series.

Well, that was to be expected with the HD remakes out on Steam at the same time for not much more. The only thing they are missing is the low gravity levels.

Another point is that we do not have absolute numbers, so we don't know how much less than the top 10 games the bottom 10 have sold. Could be anything from 2/3rd as much to 1/1000th as much.
