I'd replace Fallout with Total Annihilation. Firstly, TA is an almost unique entry into RTS that achieved a lot more than the vast majority of RTS have since. Secondly you've got Fallout 2 in there as well anyway.

Neverwinter Nights is more of a 2002 game and Icewind Dale 2 is much better, so I'd simply take it out. Not sure about a replacement from 2005.

For 2004, GOG is actually quite lacking in the greats of 2004. But I'd say that Far Cry might be a more universally agreeable great game of 2004. Nothing against Nexus, but it is kind of niche.

Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy?

Nirth: I also think it would be a good idea to have a list of all the nominees per year in the OP's post so everyone can easily find out the potential per-year winner. :)
Yeah, but that would be a lot of work :) I think the easiest way would be for people to just look up their favorite games and I am sure we get all the years done piecemeal.

JudasIscariot: >not including Sword of the Stars: The Pit in that list somewhere

Seriously, it's one of my personal favorites that came out this year :D
avatar
Novotnus: I can't find my personal favourite either :)
What would you like to see on the list?

PetrusOctavianus: OK, I'll take a little bite:

1985: Ultima IV
1986: Might and Magic 1
1988: Might and Magic 2
1989: Starflight 2: Trade Routes of the Cloud Nebula
1990: Wizardry: Bane of the Cosmic Forge
1991: Might and Magic 3
1992: Ultima Underworld
1993: Master of Orion
I log the changes you recommended but I think that it might be worth reconsidering 1990 and 1991. I think Wing Commander is a better fit for game of the year. Here is a quote from wiki for WC1

" Dragon gave it 6 stars, out of a 5-star system,[7] the Secret Missions Expansion Disk receiving 5 stars.[8] In a review by Computer Gaming World, Wing Commander received the score of 10.91, the highest rating in the history of the magazine until 1992, when it was superseded by the game's own sequel, Wing Commander II.[9] It also won Computer Gaming World's 1991 Overall Game of the Year award.[10]
In 1996, Computer Gaming World ranked it as the seventh best PC video game of all time,[11] also listing the game's Game Over funeral cutscene among the 15 best ways to die in computer gaming.[12] In 2011, Maximum PC included it on the list 16 classic games that need to be remade today, stating: "Chris Roberts and Origin really nailed the space opera with this series, which blended fast action and a fairly engaging (if hokey) story. Way ahead of its time."[13] In 2012, Time named Wing Commander one of the 100 greatest video games of all time, remembering its "unprecedented detail" of graphics and calling it "a revelation in 1990 for PC space-sim buffs looking for a little less Star Trek and a little more Star Wars from the genre."[14]"

and this is what is says about WC2:

The game received 5 out of 5 stars in 1992 in Dragon.[1]
In 2012, G4tv ranked it as the 71st top video game of all time.[2]
In 1992, it won the Origins Award for Best Fantasy or Science Fiction Computer Game of 1991

Not that Wizardy or Might and Magic 3 are weak games my any means, they got 4/5 and 5/5 in Dragon magazine. But I think we should reconsider these years.

True, I tried. All those database sites like mobygames giantbomb, they sure lack some needed filters. GOG too. I mean, pre-95, 95-05 and post-05 is way too broad in my opinion.

I wish GOG let us search games by tech specs too (much more important for older games). Like does is support a mouse, does it use sound card, was it original released on floppy or CD. Stuff like that.

The Cat Lady of course :)
I thought everybody knows: Licurg = Sacrifice fanboy, Novotnus = The Cat Lady fanboy around here :)

That you can do on mobygames actually, I never had to use it but I can see it being useful. Unfortunately picking GOG limited as a company it only shows 408 games so it's not up-to-date.

Speaking of up-to-date, a choice between actual release and GOG release would be great too especially for older games.

It wasn't meant as a definite list, just my suggestions/votes.

I'd suggest that Hero's Quest (Quest for Glory I) would be a better choice for 1989 than Starflight 2, based both on downloads and ratings.

Zookie: Edit/update: Thanks for the feedback. I have revised this list based on what people have recommended. After some thought I have come up with "rules" for the list. I will replace any entry from the rough draft based on a recommendation from someone on the forum (being a rough draft in all). Forum recommendations will have a * next to them. After that I will only change it if someone else provides some kind of convincing evidence, for example sales data showing the game was the best selling title the year it was release or that it won a bunch of awards when it came out or other kind of citable evidence like that. Evidence based entries will be bolded.
So, to make my entry a little more valid :) The Cat Lady:
- Won Adventure Gamers' Aggie for Best Story,
- Won Adventure Treff: Innovation, Game World, Surprise and Indie Adventure.
- Is pretty succesful on GOG bestselling list (~170th place, jumped over classics like Omikron or Cannon Fodder),
- Metascore 83
GOG's selection has many unfilled slots regarding games of the year, especially considering titles released in 2000+, so it's difficult to fill out blanks. My list of games of the year which are available here:
avatar
Zookie: 1999 The Longest Journey / Planescape: Torment
1998 Fallout 2
1996 Broken Sword
1995 Gabriel Knight 2
1994 Master of Magic
1993 Gabriel Knight
1992 Quest for Glory 3

Zookie: Forgive me if this has been done before. But I thought I would start a "GOG Game of the year" thread. I put together a preliminary list, but I would like some feedback. To create the rough draft I just used which games were highest on the best sellers per year on GOG (No completely accurate as some games have been on GOG a lot longer than others). But there are a lot of other factors to consider and I would appreciate feedback on which games were best each year. Some years are hard to say (1999 was a good year for gaming). Any recommendations for changes to the list? (To earn the title of GOG Game of the year it needs two criteria: 1 be on GOG, and 2 to be ,in your opinion, the best game released that year).

1984 King's Quest: Quest for the Crown

1982 Ultima II: The Revenge of the Enchantress
1981 Ultima I: The First Age of Darkness
1980 Zork I: The Great Underground Empire
You just copy/pasted the catalogue
I tried to find a title release 2008 but that was hard. I would also vote for Evil Genius or Thief: Deadly Shadows to take the 2004 spot rather than Far Cry, only because Far Cry received more fame due to its genre and graphical capabilities at its time rather than gameplay. If I recall right, that game has rather awful AI.

Until someone finds a better title for 2008, definitely throw in The Witcher: Enhanced Edition. The game itself was released 2007 but Enhanced Edition deserves the spotlight considering how many bugs it fixed.
