Ah the good ol' rpg maker. I still haven't finished my project from 2002 with rpg maker 2000...

Well it was finished and unfinshed and I never quite finalised what I tried to make.

It should not have taken this many posts to get this mentioned.

The German RPG makers are pretty good. The best were Vampire's Dawn I&II, Unterwegs nach Dusterburg and Dreamland R. Especially Dreamland R is fun, because it's a survival horror.

Also, look for a guy called Kelven in the forum, he makes the best horror RPGs so far.

When it comes to free RPG Maker games you should try Last Scenario and Exit Fate(from the same author, here, they're among the best of the lot.

There are a few others I've found that are good, but imo you should start with those two.
