Gothic 4 is on sale for like $12 today. I loved Gothic 1/2. I only heard negative stuff about 3/4. I know 3 has had some major community patches to make it pretty good. Is Gothic 4 worth it at all, or should I just pass on it? Most of the stuff I have read knocks it because it was not like the other Gothics, but I don't really care if it is "a Gothic game" I just care if it is a fun game.

For a frame of reference, I have been having a blast with Divinity II: Dragon Knights Saga
I've only heard that Gothic 4 is even worse than 3. I'm not going to touch it, myself.
Think of it as an action quest based game with few rpg elements. Not as a gothic game. Its ok but it is not worthy of the gothic name
Skip 4, buy Risen twice.
I've heard nothing but negative things about it to be honest.

I will get Risen. I am just holding out for the 10th in case it goes on deeper discount. :-)
In my opinion it is one of the worst RPG's ever. The only redeeming feature is that it looks quite nice.
It's an ok game. It's an ARPG best played with a controller, it's certainly not a Gothic game the others are correct the real Gothic 4 is Risen. Nevertheless Arcania is a decent game in it's own right.
I got it the last time the Gothic series was 75% off. It's not as bad a game as the internets were raging about. The main complaint is, as you know, it is not Gothic. It's not even an ARPG.

I would describe it as a beat-em-up with equippable items. The story is kinda weak, and the gameplay can get a little repetitive. However, the game is gorgeous and is fairly well optimized. I'd get it for less than $10, but above that there are just too many better uses of your time for the money.

And you've indicated you haven't played 3, either. Get it. Get it get it get it. With CPT 1.74 it was my favorite in the series. Especially for the $4 that it's being listed on Steam for. Get it.

Edit: Definitely don't get or even attempt to play G3:FG. It's the only one in the series that I couldn't bring myself to complete. It's worse than foot cancer.

I'm a morbid fan of Gothic I + II. I hated III, but played it many years after it had already been out for a while and there was decent patching. In the end, III is not a bad game in my opinion, I quite enjoyed it and I do think that it is worthy of the Gothic name.

Having bought Gothic 4 (Arcania) is probably the only time when I've been thinking of asking for my money back. A dreadful, dreadful game. There is virtually nothing in common with the previous games in terms of gameplay, and it also has a different protagonist. It has nothing common with the Gothic games besides the name.
Yeah, it's bad. Well, $12 bad is still less bad than $40 bad, but you get my point.
OK, Gothic III + CP and Risen. Avoid G3:FG and G4. Got it!! Sounds like G4 is not much fun even when not thinking of it as a Gothic game. Thanks All!! :-) Also, sorry for this thread, I did not see the Steam Sale thread until a few min ago.
Has anyone played Gothic 3: Forsaken Gods now that it has also been patched?

Maybe there's hope.

Yeah, I only ever tried the patched version. While there weren't really any bugs so far as I could tell, it is still an awful game. They still have characters whose dialogue is a mix of leftovers from G3 and new voiceovers done by Sesame Street rejects. They still have a super snooty Nameless Hero who keeps yelling about integrity, but then kills a golddigger's husband because you have literally no quests. It still has about 5 people per village. It still has quest givers with generic names like 'villager', while named NPC's don't do a damn thing.
Gothic 4 never happened. 3 is at least playable after the fan patches.
