spinefarm: You better go with ur GPU to a doctor to check it :D That 2 things don't sound very good

Kil3r: Good idea but this is our second GPU. The last one I was having problems with(see above) was returned(turned out to be defective). I don't think our luck is that bad to have 2 defective GPUs in a row.
The computer runs perfectly(normal frames on battlefield 3. GPU temps aren't bad anymore). The display gets automatically turned off by windows(it's a normal setting) and for some reason moving the mouse won't turn it back on.
Perhaps it's a display problem?
As for that weird temperature reading... I have no explanation. BTW the CPU temp always reads as 0 celsius and temp 4 does too. This problem we had even before anything mentioned above. We have a i5 2500k with a MSI z77MA-g45.
Not a display problem, but monitor not coming back on out of standby or sleep mode.

Settings exist to turn off power saving, or to define whether the mouse can 'wake up' a piece of hardware. Go to Control Panel, Power Options, and see what you have listed for display.

Temp of CPU should not be at zero, either. Get GPUZ for graphics info, and CPUZ for Cpu info, because something is lying.

BIOS is lying :) It will be alright after update.
You think you got problems my computer exploded [An enormous white flash with sparks shooting out everywhere] which happened five days ago.. It's gonna cost some major DOSH to fix [computer blew up on the 16th of april] I'm pretty sure it was the german and hispanic cockroaches that keep managing to infest my home even though i just recently had my home pest controlled costing me $408 I'm more then angry at the moment. I'm using my Nintendo Wii to write this message. my vid card is a shitty ati sapphire 4800 my computer is four years old

Intel core 2 duo @ 1.8ghz

Gigabyte S series G41M-ES2L mobo [Probably dead]

Sapphire 4830 512mb GDDR 3 dx10.1 SM 4.1

Generic 1gb ram

Seagate 250gb hdd [forgot the make]

XIGMATEK 550w psu [Destroyed]
LG super multi DVD-/+ RAM drive 16x
with a

MEDION 500gb "up 'n go" external usb hdd

So yeah it's pretty old.

AND IT STILL PLAYS SKYRIM AT HIGH QUALITY.

If you are lucky, it will just be the power supply.

If a loud pop at the time, like a firecracker, a capacitor blew.

Not sure what you have available, or how comfortable you are fiddling with things, but is likely to be cheaper/easier to fix than you think.

Depends on what else the PSU took with it.

When the PSU went on my last system, it managed to take the DVD drive with it as there were nice scorch marks on the power connector for it. There's always the chance that damage was done to the mobo and CPU as well.

Replacing a PSU might be cheap provided that it's not some funky proprietary shaped/sized one on an off-the-shelf computer or something from like Dell.

Always the possibility it takes something else, but most I've replaced took nothing, other than themselves.

Is worth checking what is and isn't good, to give you a head start on that next build, should it be required.
Short answer: You can't really know if things were damaged, unless they're so broken as to be obvious.

My suggestion would be to carry on as if everything is fine, but if you start getting graphic glitches or crashes in the future, remember t his incident and try swapping out the display card (or adding one if you're using onboard).

Thermal failsafes are designed to stop it from breaking itself, but they're not a guarantee It could still be damaged if you're unlucky.

I'd bet it's going to work fine though, for as long as that card is anywhere performance competitive..
Lets hope so but that sh!tty xigmatek psu from LEC toronto here in Australia it's $90 for cleaning and workmanship and $50 for a new psu if that is all thats wrong with it could be upwards of $300 to get it up and running again! p.s. it trips the houses electricity box [the one on the side of my house]

Given the age of your setup, I'd just suggest building an entire new rig. $300 into a four year old setup is like sticking $1000 rims on a $500 car. Just not worth it. You can probably save the hard drives and the optical.

One thing I'd recommend is a case with a clear side on it. That way, you can keep a constant watch on the components inside, like if anything got into it or the fans aren't spinning. I like mine (a Raidmax Smilodon) for that fact plus that both sides fold down making installation/building a breeze.
Unlike some I don't have thousands or even hundreds of dollars to just throw down on a new rig I am on the disability support pension for Asperger's Syndrome and other maladies including irritable bowel syndrome so no i couldn't work.

You can build a decent rig for probably $500. If you build it yourself, you can find what works for you and fits your budget/scenario. It's not all that difficult to put one together anymore.

Edit - What you could always do, is buy a component at a time. Like one month buy the case and the power supply. The next, get the motherboard and the RAM. The next, the CPU. And so on until you've got everything.
