gameon: I cancelled it just now. I will try again to download once i know its fully fixed. If you'd be kind enough to let me know if/when that is....
Of course. They're supposed to email me once it's fixed so I'll post it in the thread when they do.

gameon: I missed that originally. Good spot. Hopefully it'll be fine and working when its downloaded.
I tested the .zip in Winrar and it was happy with it, so it bodes well. Not going to install tonight though.

gameon: Thanks on both points there. Its also nice that the groupees support is quick to respond and resolve problems. This download for darkfall is much more like it (around 500kbps).
Yeah, their own servers seem to be pretty fast. The only one I had speed problems with was the one with the horrible GetRightToGo downloader (NecroVision), and it turned out that the actual game was being hosted on StrategyFirst's servers for some reason (SF just gave Groupees the downloader instead of the game).
I downloaded the Dark Fall zip a few hours ago after you mentioned that they replaced the downloader with a direct download. It downloaded right quick, unzips just fine, and it was able to install and launch just fine. :D

Now, hopefully they will be about as prompt with the other two DRM-free titles I picked up as they have been with Dark Fall.

It took them about a day to fix Dark Fall so I'd hope for NecroVision to be fixed tomorrow. Not sure if they know about Ubersoldier 2 yet though.
Meanwhile, my Ubersoldier 2 download is at 1.2K per second, has downloaded 143 MB (10% of the game), and notes "Resumed 60 times" ...

Downloads from all other sources work normally and at high speed.

gameon: It seems Ubersoldier 2 is yet another mess up. But they have been quick to sort out the issues once they know of them. (although they should have known to start with)
Yep. I might add that I'm not even annoyed, but rather ... amused instead. Ubersoldier 2 is not really a game I'm dying to play, getting it was more a decision of "Another DRM-free game for just 75 cent - ah well, put it on the pile!". ;) The games that I actually was interested in (BEEP, The Ball, Xotic, Caster) all downloaded fine.

As long as I eventually do get the game I paid for (and that seems to be the case), the delay doesn't stress me, it's just a bit ridiculous to see download rates of 1.2K/sec. I think my very first modem, which I bought about 25 years ago for my Atari ST, would have been capable of that speed. ;)

Yep, confirmed. While I'm typing this, I've already downloaded more of the game than the downloader managed to in about a day. ;)

Thanks for the info. :) Stupid me had checked the download page for an _additional_ direct download link, but I hadn't noticed that they _replaced_ the previous link to the slow downloader with one to a fast direct connection.

gameon: Now all they need to do is confirm that Necrovision is fixed.
Right, bit of a weird one here:
We've pinged a few other users about the Necrovision file and they have been able to load/run the game successfully.

....

It's unclear why the issue is with the Necrovision files though we have contacted the publisher about this issue and are waiting word back.
This is very odd, because what I understood from their first reply is that my MD5 matched theirs which means my file wasn't corrupted during download. Skunk also has exactly the same MD5 as me and gets a corrupted warning from all the programs he tried.

gameon: Hmm. I noticed from my e-mails that they told me iffy info.

I asked them: The drm free downloads have been very slow/non responsive too. Maybe the server is overloaded?

they replied: We are also looking into this issue... and think there may be a bug impacting performance.

(That was for the drm free version of dark fall. Well it wasn't a bug, it was the fact that they weren't actually hosting that file to start with......!)
When did you ask that?

SirPrimalform: When did you ask that?

gameon: 22nd may (they replied the same day)
Oh well then that could well be before they had realised. They only fixed the Dark Fall thing yesterday...

gameon: (sigh) i downloaded it today to check, and i have the same problem.
Then yeah, it has to be corrupted at the source. I don't understand how some people could have got it working, unless it wasn't corrupted on the first day or something.

gameon: My guess is that the people they asked thought the question was about whether the download itself was running ok, or that they were able to download fine (through steam).

As long as they sort the link out, i'll be happy. But a waste of 5gb is bad for us, and must be bad for their bandwith too....
More like 13GB for me. One "failed at 3GB" attempt and then two successful downloads of a broken .zip.
While most people use NTFS as file system today there are still many using FAT32, which has a 4gb file size limit. That's maybe not the only problem here, but it shows they didn't really thought about possible problems. Also such a big file size is really problematic to download for people with a small bandwidth. I hope they will decide to split it in smaller parts, max 2gb per file.

Does anyone actually use FAT32 for a system drive? Surely Windows XP has to be the oldest OS still in use, and that uses NTFS...

NTFS was still optional at installation, but I don't know if it was the preferred option. As far as I remember most preconfigured WinXP computers I got in my hand (mostly Notebooks) still used FAT32.

Edit: I wrote stupid things, NTFS was introduced before XP. Removed that part.
