Just asking this here for all the knowledgeable people on here who might know the answer to this.

Tonight my Episode 1 and Episode 2 flagged themselves for update that required them to be converted to the new SteamPipe format.

Now, I can see from the Steam client that Episode 2 is around 6GB in size, yet when I search my steamapps folder for Episode 2 files I can only find the following:

A 500MB GCF file (half-life 2 episode two english.gcf) in steamapps
A folder in "steamapps\<user>\half-life 2 episode two" which is 84.1MB
A folder in "steamapps\common\Half-Life 2\ep2" which is 283MB

Now clearly those do not total up to 6GB, so where are the game files stored? Also, aren't the GCF file and the <user> folder obsolete now that it is in SteamPipe format?

I have noticed that since the conversion there is an update pending, so that will be downloaded shortly, but I wouldn't have thought that would make much difference to the above files unless it turns out to be a large update.

Anyone know anything about this?

EDIT: Just checked my Portal install as that converted some time ago now, and though Steam lists it as 5320MB in the local content menu, and 4.09GB in the game library, I can only find about 1.2GB of files, again being GCF and folders in both steamapps\<user> and steamapps\common. So where are the game files?

UPDATE: Okay, after all the updates finished the folder size for "steamapps\common\Half-Life 2\ep2" has increased to 3.16GB. Still not at the 6GB size, but clearly better. It could be that the reported sizes in Steam local files dialog menu are inaccurate as SteamPipe is supposed to be more efficient with smaller file sizes, but still having the GCF and files in steamapps\<user> does seem a little odd now that it is SteamPipe format.

Well it will take to make the transition. I see nothing weird about it.

Make sure that the update process is completed and don't worry.
Steam know what he is doing. All files are there.

Files are stored in SteamApps/common/(game) or SteamApps/(user)/(game)

Portal, HL2, EP1, EP2, and other Source engine games, not only have their own data files, but also use graphics, sounds, models and materials from the common Source archives:

Source Models.gcf
Source Materials.gcf
Source Sounds.gcf
Source 2007 Shared Models.gcf
Source 2007 Shared Materials.gcf
Source 2007 Shared Sounds.gcf

That's 3.6 GB of stuff. There's your missing files.

... also I had to download 2 GB of stuff after the update. ARGH.

Edit: Oh great, Half-Life 2 also went to Steampipe. No wonder. Time to download all that stuff too...

Okay, so yes, if I include those shared GCFs then that does bring the size up. I thought GCFs were being made obsolete with SteamPipe though? And the steamapps\<user> folder. Any idea why I still have a few files in the steamapps\<user> folder? Are they forgotten leftovers that can be removed or are they still in use?

My Half-Life 2 seemed to already have been moved to SteamPipe (don't remember when that was) as it only did the Ep 1 and Ep 2 last night. Oh, and yes, Ep 2 did take a while to convert to the new format for some reason. After both episodes had converted to SteamPipe I did have about 1GB of update to download in total.

That's the thing - I have no idea why they're still there! Maybe they're keeping them in GCF files because if they changed them, then it would break backwards compatibility with mods for the old engine?

Ah, it seems my Half-Life 2 wasn't converted after all, the Episodes only picked it up as they detected an update for some reason. Trying to load HL2 tonight and it kicked off the conversion. And yes, it is still at 0% after quite some time. It must be the HL2 conversion. >_<
Force-quit Steam with the task manager, then restart it. That fixed things for me.

Weird. Now I don't know whether it converted or not.

I killed off Steam before I read your reply and after doing a little Googling I found out Portal had also been SteamPipe converted (so all the Orange Box games). So I gave that one a try and it converted fine (but has left me with a 1.7GB update to download). Then went back to HL2 and instead of giving a conversion message it just loaded straight up. No idea if HL2 has converted or not. :S
