Thanks Thespian*!

Some good suggestions so far, folks! Keep 'em coming!
Not entering (horror movies really aren't my thing), but I just wanted to say thank you for doing this!
Not entering, but if you have not seen Let the Right One In, then go do so right away. And the less said about it before viewing the better.
Not entering (too lazy to write review :D), but +1 for giveaway.
Not entering, as I prefer subtle horror to slasher and splatter movies and I don't know a lot of really eerie movies (as opposed to really gory movies, of which there are plenty). But I like good subtle and eerie horror games like Dark Fall: The Journal and Botanicula, so the least I can do for you is vote for Barrow Hill on the wishlist. ;)
Un chien andalou by Luis Bunuel, written by Salvador Dalì in 1928.

The movie isn't a real "horror", it was one of the first surrealist movie.
It' is characterised by juxtapositions, the rejection of dramatic psychology, and a frequent use of shocking imagery (thanks Wikipedia XD)

I saw this on college and...it really shocked me.It's short,by the way,and you can see this here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahWBVjz75f8

I remember exactly the (in)famous opening scene,a fist to your stomach. And the movie, itself,is nothing then a real nightmare. The "scary" thins is that every scene can be explained thanks to psychology,...and too often what you will discover, the meaning of each screen and scene,is more shocking then the movie itself.

If you suffer of heart, please DON'T open that link.

EDIT:Sorry I know,this review sucks,but it's difficult for me making a good review in english :(

Scary Movie 3

It's a movie about a chick who watches a movie, but this movie is cursed, once you watched it you have 7 days to live. Now this chick has 7 days to stop death in his tracks, or she dies. On the way she help investigate Crop circles and stop a full blown Alien Invasion
Bad Taste by Peter Jackson, hands down. Often forgotten in favour of the more popular Braindead.

It's a truly masterful blend of gore horror and bizarre comedy. It's a film where a guy desperately tries to put a piece of his brain back in his skull, and succeeds to a certain extent with the help of a hat. Also, the Beatles make a guest appearance. Yup.

See it immediately!
The movie I have in my mind as of right now when it comes to horror would be Jacob's Ladder I got to watch the movie recently and it just sticks in my head. The story sounds simplistic a Vietnam Vet is having a rough life all of a sudden. The main thing to take into notice is the movie is highly atmospheric since his dreams and reality appear to be blurring together. This flick has everything that goes perfect in horror. A conspiracy theory, creepy stuff, and just all around crazy. The movie goes from sad to scary back to sad and back to scary many many time. I think that is one thing that keeps me watching that.

Another that I have not seen yet but have been recommended was the movie Audition if you can stand sub-titles or understand Japanese you should have a scary good time with this movie. Directed by the amazing Takashi Miike this movie is another simple subject that just goes freaking insane. The plot starts with a man, who's wife died, getting help with the ladies from his friends. What they do to find him a new wife is hold auditions to find one. As you could imagine horrible things could come from that but I've heard it gets to you on a horror level real hard after he picks a girl. The movie was on Netflix last time I checked so I'll probably watch it soon and get back to you on that.

Edit: Looking through here someone mentioned DAGON which reminded me of another Lovecraft-ian kinda movie. In the Mouth of Madness was made by John Carpenter and does a really good job of providing a creepy atmosphere as well as good visuals. The effects in this movie are mostly non-CG(there are a few but they are minor). The plot is simple with a author going missing a man is sent out to find him. Once he finds him he kinda wishes he did not do that but doubts it highly at first. The world around him twists itself into the author's books and before he knows it he is involved in the story. The man tries desperately to get the author for his money and escape but everything is working against him here. I still feel like the main reason to watch this movie is the effects. John does a amazing job on the monsters. They are all kinda suit-y monster puppet things that just look great for the time and even today.

pbmacros: Event Horizon

I have a friend who constantly serves me horror movies. Most of them land in the trash can of my brain, but this one did not. Its different, there is no horrible beast that can be fought, there are no people acting stupid as hell, it just works. This is one of the few movies that could actually scare me, along with Silent Hill, but Silent Hill got boring the second time. I could write about the story, but its boring to spoiler. I will just tell you it plays in Space.
Apparently the movie has been massively cut. I can't imagine where. Maybe you get your hands on a DVD Version, many of them made it there, some have been lost.
Some other interesting facts: Only 3 months after its initial release short scenes from it made it into Star Trek, also developers of Doom worked on it.

So don't miss this often overseen gem.
Event Horizon is in my top 10 horror movies list....
excellent movie
Fun fun :)
Great idea for a contest. Unfortunately I don't watch horror either or play horror games. But wtg for the giveaway! :)
i consider myself a huge horror movie fan.
for me, ive noticed that some people like horror movies more, under the specific decade, that they came out in...
every decennial makes changes to the horror films makeup
horror moives now are all about gore...
dont get me wrong, i still like & watch horror films of this generation but they are lacking the flavor that makes a horror film great...
i actually did an English paper once on the changes from Horror Films now compared to the Horror Films of the past. lol!

for a 11 year old movie, i suggest DAGON

Its based on H.P. Lovecrafts short story Mountains Of Madness.
The director is Stuart Gordon, who made other excellent films in the 80s & 90s, such as Re-Animator, Dolls, From Beyond, & Castle Freak.

here is the storyline:
Based on a short story by H.P. Lovecraft, the undisputed master of the macabre, Dagon tells the story of Paul Marsh, a young man who discovers that the truth will not set him free instead it condemns him to a waking nightmare of unrelenting horror. A boating accident off the coast of Spain sends Paul and his girlfriend Barbara to the decrepit fishing village of Imboca looking for help. As night falls, people start to disappear and things not quite human start to appear. Paul finds himself pursued by the entire town. Running for his life, he uncovers Imboca's dark secret: that they pray to Dagon, a monstrous god of the sea. And Dagon's unholy offspring are freakish half-human creatures on the loose in Imboca.

its Sci-Fi, meets Horror. The feeling of isolation of being the only sane human being on this island & the creepy music along with the creepy people & their high pitched, & garbled voices that builds the movie up & helps bring that skin crawling feeling of fear for Paul & Barbara, in seeking help while stuck on this creepy island. there are alot of high adrenaline moments in the film. If youve seen any of Stuart Gordons other films then you know that you are in for a treat. his movies are always a bit bizarre but they always leave you with a feeling of being on the edge of your seat & always wanting more...

i also suggest his other movies if you havent seen them. They are hidden gems but also very well, spoken for by underground horror fans. good luck on your horrorfest! :)

If you like zombie films then I recommend

COCKNEY'S VS ZOMBIES

the very much NSFW red band trailer is below

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eH3p-giK1MU

When a virus starts bringing the dead back to life, well unlife a whole bunch of cockney's, young and old...and ancient, try to take back the East End of London the only way they know how. By shooting zombies again and again and again.

With a great British cast of character actors that most people out of the UK wont have heard of this is a film NOT TO BE MISSED. (But mostly will be, even by folk in the UK).
Hatchet II (2010)

A recent horror movie involving a woman, Marybeth, escaping from her killer, Victor Crowley, from the first film. The first film does not need to be seen, but you're likely to watch if you wish. After she learns about how her family is involved with the killer, learning about his past and whatnot, she heads back to the swamps with an army of hunters.

That's where the fun begins! Although the beginning is pretty hilarious and gory. Every kill in the movie is sick, bloody, and funny. If you want to watch and see how ridiculous it is, watch it. Those death scenes are great.

I recommended it to my cousin. He found it hilarious, yet gory, too.
Sadly I'm the kind of woman who is easily scared by horror films (and games). *shame*
I stopped watching them because I couldn't walk through a dark room afterwards and had trouble sleeping.

Anyway, I'd like to recommend "Event Horizon". I cannot really write a review about it, so I'll just tell you about my personal experience with this movie.

I watched "Event Horizon" in 1998 while staying with a host family in Venezuela.
I'm a big science fiction fan and thought it would just be another entertaining science fiction movie.
I was wrong as I found out some time into the movie.
But I thought, hey, there will be a happy end and everything will be fine, I'll stop being scared and can go to bed.
All members of my host family had already gone to bed and I stayed awake because I needed a happy end so badly.

On one hand I really enjoyed the movie, the characters, the "scenery". Without wanting to spoil to much of the story , it's a really atmospheric and dark movie about a rescue mission to an experimental space craft that had disappeared some time a go and now suddenly was back but unresponsive.

When the movie was over I sat pale and still on the sofa and didn't dare to leave the TV room because I knew I would have to cross the dark living room to reach the next light switch. So I just sat there.
A rat ran across the room. And I happily thought, oh, a rat. That's nice. Rats are something a know. Rats are good. Hi, rat!
I smiled a bit and contemplated sleeping on the sofa in the TV room with the lights on.
In that moment something hit the window behind me with a loud gargling, panting sound.
I dived from the sofa and hid behind the huge TV set like some kind of demented action hero thinking something was going to attack me. My heart pounded and I was desperately trying not to scream.

It was just the family's dog, a boxer, who had decided to see who was up that late at night and had jumped against the window.

I found some choice words for him and then made the difficult journey to my bed room.

Libera temet ex inferis.
