I am sure you have already tried this,
I find after uninstalling a game (such as commandos, fallout 2, xiii) if I search through the registry for the game I have uninstalled under the publishers names, developers name, and the game itself I can come across all kinds of left overs scattered around. I feel they sometimes do it deliberately to punish players for uninstalling their games.
Occasionally the Edit/Uninstall programs portion of the Control Panel can also see a game that has been uninstalled from a machine too. I had that problem with Dawn of War 2, that caused me irritation as it could not remove the game as the files had all gone, but still saw something.
