I ask because I played (or attempted to play) Gothic 3 a few years back from disk, and it crashed so much I had to give it up. The crashes didn't start happening until I progressed past the first general area, after that the crashes started occurring more and more frequently until the game became unplayable. I would LOVE to try it again, but wonder if I'm going to have the same problems with the GOG version. So, if anyone bought it from GOG and has progressed pretty far into the game, could you let me know how stable it is?

Thanks!
Did you patch the game to 1.74 (or is it automatically at that patchlevel)? if not, try to apply the community patch. It fixes lots of things.
I don't have this game installed currently. Although I have my old XP machine, I uninstalled the game years ago. I'm hoping to install the GOG version on my newer PC, which is Vista (and is much more powerful). I have heard that the community patch is essential, and I will be sure to install it if I decide to download the game. I was just hoping to get confirmation from someone about the playability of the GOG version. With or without the patch.
You played Gothic3 vanilla and went mad? Welcome to the club.

Yes, the last community patch should fix most issues.
Alright... I guess it's worth a try for ten bucks! Thanks guys.

It's on sale for $4.99 at the moment. I just started it with the community 1.74 patch. Only bad I have noticed is the choppy graphics and my character seems to put his weapon away in a battle from time to time. Other than that is seems fine so far. I get killed a lot . . . =)
$4.99. Even better!

It is indeed.

Thought I should add that I discovered I was hitting the middle mouse button during combat which caused my character to put away his weapon. My bad. The graphics are not choppy constantly BTW, I think loading next graphic as I move forward causes the issue every so often, not that bad once you get used to it. . . =)
Ah yes, the accidental holstering. Hey, live (or die!) and learn.

I don't remember if I had problems with choppiness when I played it before, but all PCs are different. My problems didn't start till my character had gained enough experience to travel further abroad. Maybe because (as I read in another forum or somewhere) the whole game is loaded into memory at the beginning it just became too bogged down in later areas. Well, hopefully the patching fixed that. I remember trying to find patches at the time, but they were only available for European versions of the game for some reason.

Not much you can do about the choppiness, unfortunately.

I watched a let's play on Youtube by jpagamer, using a more powerful system than I have, and he had 'lag spikes' every episode.

Applying a large address aware mod might help a little, but yeah, the loading freezes are pretty much inevitable. I think it's just a fault of how the engine is designed.

It's not really that bad on my system but it is noticeable as I move forward some distance.

I am going to remap the holster weapon from the mouse if I can, space does the same already anyway. Since fighting uses both the left and right mouse buttons continuously it's too easy to hit the middle button by accident. So far I have really enjoyed the game but it's slowed down a bit as I have trouble killing the "Hungry wolves" for some reason. Slow progress and not accumulating wealth as fast as I would like.
