StingingVelvet: It's playing fine right now with my Logitech G500.

PoSSeSSeDCoW: It may have only been my G15 keyboard. There's a thread on the FEAR Steam forum about the issue; I'm not the only one. Apparently it's because FEAR overpolls the USB bus.
Correct, if you go and disable the G15's screen, it actually fixes the problem.

Does it matter which G-15 you have ( I think mine is the original ) ?

From what I understood if you have the logitech drivers and the screen on the keyboard it messes up the fps in the game causing you to drop to 12 fps and below. Now of course I can't say for sure if you'll also be effected, but plenty of people have the issue.
It depends on what you're looking for. I mean, I could also recommend Bulletstorm or ARMA II but they're just as different from FEAR as they are from each other.

I have the original G15 and it does affect the game. As Dashiva said, disabling the screen fixes the problem. It's just somewhat tedious to disable the screen when I want to play and then enable it after I finish playing.

Exactly why I didn't bother most of the time. The game would usually run fine for roughly 9-10 minutes before it messed up. For once I had a lot of patience and just kept saving and restarting the game.
In terms of visceral FPS combat, I'll have to agree with Crysis. I just don't think any game has ever done it better, except for maybe Half-Life 2.

I enjoyed FEAR for its story/atmosphere, but the combat felt incredibly repetitive after a few hours. I don't mind fighting the same enemies, but FEAR had you fighting them in the exact same situations over and over again. Crysis was adaptable enough that every single fight played out completely differently.

I'm playing it on Win7 64bit right now and it works perfectly.
It always struck me as kind of uninspired and generic, like some souped up Unreal Tournament. But I guess it's pretty good, I'll have to revisit it knowing that there are so many high opinions of it.

Kingoftherings: Have you played FEAR 2? It's been a long time since I played either FEAR game, but I enjoyed the sequel.
I like FEAR 2 a lot, much more than many fans of the original seem to. That said it doesn't hold a candle to the original.

Yea, this. It was pretty much the same corridors, over and over again.

Cool...

When I built this PC I have now, almost one year ago exactly, FEAR was the first game I loaded because I wanted to see how it looked with my shiny new hardware. It crashed out over and over and I was fearful I had a hardware issue. But no other game has had an issue, so I'm pretty happy about that.

I'll try what Dashiva and PossessedCow ( Thank you :-) have said and try it again. I honestly don't make too much real use out of my G-15 (aside from using it as a keyboard) so I might just keep the screen disabled.

I have the ATI HD 5870, so if it still crashes, maybe its an ATI issue. Plus, I think I've upgraded those drivers at least a half a dozen times since I last tried. It is the only game I tried that has had any issue at all under Win 7. I'd just like to play through it again.

There are some things about the game that feel uninspired to me too. I feel there could be a greater variety of enemies and a few more kinds of challenges in the maps... And the early game is really bogged down in cinematic cut-scenes with dull acting that you sorta have to sit through.

But it is what the game does well that makes it shine. The AI is really good. And the presentation is spectacular. It really is creepy and atmospheric while also being a huge adrenaline rush. Every game has flaws, but this game's strengths so overcome its weaknesses that I barely notice things that would really irk me in a lessor title.

And bullet time was awesome when Max Payne trotted it out. It doesn't really do well in some other games that have used it, but it really fits this game wonderfully because it fits the idea of you being this soldier with heightened and enhanced reflexes and senses... and gives you a change to soak up some nice eye candy while you plow through a legion of evil super soldiers.

Meh, FEAR was alright.
The story was filled with clichés and predictable, but I don't play FPS' for the story anyway.
The combat was pretty generic FPS stuff for the most part, although there are some scenes which are just beyond cool.
Like that one with all the guys coming out of the elevators?
With the slow-mo and the particle effects that scene was just beautiful chaos.

Hmm, so has the combat been done better?
Well I suppose it depends on the type of combat, the very specific FEAR type combat which is a blend of realistic and Max Payne.. probably not.
